Just like Fort Sumter, the bases belong to the US Federal Government.
However, GI’s stationed in California get overseas tour duty.
[It would mean two more Republican Senators, not to mention the extra red state electors in the electoral college.]
It won’t take long for the Dems that were left in the blue part to be disgusted of the mess they made, and move to the “conservative” side. Except they will bring the same sh-tty politics and beliefs as the liberal end, resulting in another blue state.
Exactly! They already have too much say in how the country is run. We’d be better off if they’d just go away.
Interesting.
You do realize that if that assertion is true, then Lincoln was literally committing Treason by waging war on States, don't you?
That is probably the reason that no Confederate officer (military or civil) was charged with Treason: to do so would undermine the [stated/legal] justification for the Civil War.
Maybe Lincoln saw it as enforcing Article IV Section 4?
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.Maybe Lincoln was getting ahead of the domestic violence caused by the seceding states going rogue?
If taking Article IV Section 4 literally, then Lincoln would not expect a seceding state to "apply" for "protection."
On the other hand, Lincoln may have seen it as "guaranteeing to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government..." If the logic of Madison's letters (see my linked post in post 32) is accepted, then the right to secede is simultaneously a right for other states to oust an undesirable state. When states have the right to gang up on other states, then the republican form of government breaks down.

A conservative state with traditional American values.
But then, guess where all the a-holes in L.A. and S.F. would move to after they retired. Just like they did in Oregon and Washington.
They should think about splitting as well. Portland and Seattle out vote the rest of the state.
If California left the Union, 49 or 56 other states would be pleased as punch to get rid of 55 electoral votes.
One tally relies upon traditional history, while the other number is based upon the lazy math of #44.
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.
Did the State Legislatures apply for it? Did the State Executives?
If taking Article IV Section 4 literally, then Lincoln would not expect a seceding state to "apply" for "protection."
And yet that very application is needed to justify any action under Art. 4, Sec 4.
However ....... 2 sections is not enough.
The top portion of CA is CONSERVATIVE - from the border of OR, until you get almost to Sacramento.
The middle portion of CA is UNTRA LIBERAL - from just above San Francisco, to just below Los Angeles.
The lower portion of CA is CONSERVATIVE - from just below Los Angeles, to the border of Mexico.
I would refer to my earlier argument that secession is extra-constitutional, and back that up with Madison's second letter (found at the linked post from my earlier post 32. In that letter, Madison says that the Constitution conferred citizenship in the United States on the citizens of the several states. Once conferred, the state legislatures did not have the authority to revoke citizenship in the United States on the citizens of their own state. That citizenship became a natural right of the individual.
So it's possible that Lincoln felt he was protecting citizens of the United States held hostage (if you will) by the governments of the seceding states. In this case, an act of Congress might be needed under Article I Section 8: "To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions..." The seceding states would be considered an insurrection with United States citizens held hostage, and Congress can call up the militia and place them under the command of the Commander-In-Chief.

Break this state in two right at the San Luis Obispo / Monterey county line.
North California will be solid blue state. South California will be a purple state. Take away LA County, it probably goes red.
Classic British Understatement.
Monterey is south of Frisco...we don’t want them.
Look at the map of Jefferson further up thread. That is where the division should be.
