With the North Sea oil fields in serious decline, and low prices likely to remain long term due to fracking, Scotland is a long-term welfare case. The “Shale Band” for oil prices ($40-$60/bbl), means that Scotland will be a money loser until something fundamental changes.
A bit more industrious than Greece no doubt, but about as socialist, with none of the nice beaches, or Navy. They will fervently demand free Nationalized health care, which they will never be able to pay for.
Scotland runs the biggest fiscal operating deficit in the Western World.
Perhaps the EU would also be good enough to take over subsidies to Puerto Rico for the US as well. That would really poke us in the eye - oh please don’t do that!/sarcasm
Welfare refugees and Welfare Nations of the world unite! The best handouts are in the EU - they can always tax Germans more.
I wouldn’t let Scotland leave. I would schedule a plebiscite 20 years to the day from the last one — if they wanted to keep trying.
That aside, the EU should not be interfering with Britain’s internal affairs.
