Massive power outage hits San Francisco. BART station, cable cars, traffic lights.

A massive power outage in San Francisco caused a blackout Friday morning in neighborhoods across the city, from the Financial District to the Presidio, forcing the closure of businesses, a BART station, cable car service and a federal courthouse, officials said. A spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said 95,000 customers lost power and that there had been a fire at a substation at Larkin and Eddy streets. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the fire caused the outage, which swept through the city shortly after 9 a.m., or was ignited as a result of the outage. As of 11 a.m., PG&E officials could not provide an estimate for when service would return.

The San Francisco Fire Department was responding to numerous calls for service, including people stuck in elevators, but reported no immediate injuries. Everywhere, sirens blared as engines maneuvered along jammed streets. Traffic lights were out in scores of intersections, and traffic was backing up on downtown streets as drivers grew frustrated and honked at each other. BART’s Montgomery Station was closed due to the outage, and trains were running through the station without stopping. All cable cars were down, as were several Muni bus lines that typically run on electricity from overhead wires, including the 30, 45, 22, and 24. Shuttles were put in place to provide service, according to the Municipal Transportation Agency.

They’ll blame Trump’s flipping the finger to the Paris agreement.

Yeah, I found out about this from the BART train operator on the way in this am. Had to get off at a different BART station, walking back a few blocks through the heart of the financial district, everything was closed. People milling around on the sidewalks. My office building was open though, apparently, we have a backup generator.

The one in NY apparently hit signals/escalators in a few subway stations during rush hour. Not sure on the L.A. one. It looks like the SF one is the only one still being worked on.

Outages in L.A. and NYC as well.

They represent the kind of coincidence that deserves examining for any possible common cause - Leftist “resistance” anarchists and cyber security come to mind. Smart officials would at least examine the possibility of a common cause.

NY subway issue as well this morning at rush hour:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/04/21/power-problem-subway-delays/

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Platforms were packed and some riders were stuck underground in the dark after a power outage in Midtown Manhattan backed up trains all over the city, making for a nightmare commute during the Friday morning rush hour.

Hundreds of riders were packed inside a D train when it got stuck in a tunnel just short of the subway stop at Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street after the signals lost power around 7:30 a.m.

“They were just like we’re going to stay here momentarily because there’s a power outage,” said commuter Max Civil.
