I’m going to be a partial contrarian here. I consider Mme Le Pen to be the least bad option for France, not the best. The establishment in France has such a chokehold on political life and discourse that they are driving dissent to the extremes.
(Freepers shouldn’t kid themselves, significant parts of the FN platform are not friendly to individual liberty. They would maintain significant state involvement in health care and banking and other industries with a level of state control most Freepers would abhor. I consider it semi fascist, more in the vein of Franco than Mussolini, but still ultimately hostile to the level of liberty in our Constitution)
That is why Communist or semi-fascist FN parties are the only real venues for people who want significant change to the status quo. Given the alternatives, Mme Le Pen’s remains the best of a bad lot. But I take no joy in this.
Not many Americans know that Lafayette was like a son to George Washington. George Washington was childless. Lafayette was strong and powerful leader, general and support of Washington and the American nation!!!

True, the chance of another Islamic atrocity is always a wild card.
I would think that the slaughters in Nice and Paris would be more than reason enough for the French electorate to abandon business-as-usual politics. As seen in the Netherlands, however, continental voters can be rather hard-wired in their party loyalties.
We shall see.
Any error in the exit polling would tend to be in the direction of underestimating the Le Pen percentage, I would think. Will be interesting to see how well the exit polls and the real results agree.
My hubby always says of European politics, that their "far right" is our "center left".
