With Supreme Court seat filled, GOP looks to lower courts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have put President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee on the bench, and they’re now in a position to fill dozens more federal judgeships — and reshape some of the nation’s highest courts.

Democrats have few ways to stop them.

The Republicans’ opportunity comes with the GOP in control of Congress and the White House, about 120 vacancies in federal district and appeals courts to be filled and after years of partisan fights over judicial nominations.

Frustrated by Republican obstruction in 2013, then-majority Democrats changed Senate rules so judicial nominations for those trial and appeals courts are filibuster-proof, meaning it takes only 51 votes, a simple majority in the 100-member Senate, for confirmation.

Today, Senate Republicans hold 52 seats.

The Democratic rules change did not apply to Supreme Court nominations. But Senate Republicans are now in the majority, and they changed the rules in similar fashion this month to confirm federal Judge Neil Gorsuch to the high court over Democratic opposition. As a result, the GOP can almost guarantee confirmation of future Supreme Court justices, as well, if there are more openings with Trump in office and Republicans are in the majority.

The 2018 Senate map for Democrats is atrocious too. There is a good chance of President Trump filling judicial vacancies for at least four years.

Please let Jeff Sessions pick them, not some “centrist” adviser.

Getting the courts under control is a major goal, in my opinion.

As we have seen, the liberals use the courts to accomplish things they couldn’t do through the legislative process.

And now we see that, so far in the Trump administration, they are willing to use the courts to block lawful executive orders of a president.

The only way to stop this nonsense is if the judges are reasonable and toss out such legal challenges.

Speaking of absurd legal actions, did everyone note the other day, that some child, an 11 year old, was party to a lawsuit in which Trump was being sued over not taking actions against global warming???

That’s a great example of liberals going way too far. But if liberal judges get their way, then we would see the spectacle of courts ordering a president to take actions against global warming.

Rather than dealing with the legislative process, and trying to pass laws which deal with what we can do to cut emissions, etc. the liberals now have decided that it violates our civil rights if we don’t take actions they approve of against this threat of global warming.

What they need is legidlation denying courts below the scotus the power to reverse acts of president or congress without (1) agreement from their en banc appeals court, and (2) agreement by scotus to put the case on their docket.

At all levels, Trump should nominate ONLY conservative Constitutionalists. No progressives or “centrists” (I.e., progressives in waiting) should be even considered for nomination.

This is an incredible opportunity to attain control of an entire branch of government for decades. Far better then diddling with Congress.

Sweet, sweet music to my ears. It will be wonderful to have judges, not legislators, in black robes.

Republicans will still find a myriad of ways to stop themselves. On that we can depend...

I think this is happening more than we think or is reported. I was reading about a criminal case the other day online. It was mentioned in the story that the judge who decided the case and handed out the sentence was no longer on the bench, because he was just replaced by Trump administration. This was a judge in Maine.
It’s going to take a few years to really feel and see these changes.
