Hershey’s just announced a major change to their chocolate, and it’s probably [NOT] a good plan

America’s most iconic chocolate, Hershey’s, is slimming down. Hershey announced earlier this week that half of its candy bars and candy products will drop to 200 calories or less. They expect the shift to be fully in place by the year 2022.

In a press release, the company stated that it expects to meet the goal in two ways. First of all, they will be reformulating their products. Additionally, they will adjust the size of certain items.

The changes will affect standard and king-sized items.

We can’t help but wonder if this means they’ll merely be getting smaller, which at first is like, not cool. We’ll have to buy more candy bars to make it through our eighteenth bingeing of Buffy. But it’s probably a good idea, though.

By the end of 2018, the company aims to apply easy-to-read caloric information to the front of all of its products.

“We aim to delight our consumers and these steps will provide an even wider range of portion options and clear information to help them select treats that fit their lifestyle,” Hershey president and CEO Michele Buck said.

The changes were inspired by customer feedback, according to Hershey.

“We’re calling it informed choice — where I can walk up to the display and if I want a king size, that’s my choice, but I want to know what I’m buying and how many calories are involved,” spokesman Jeff Beckman told USA Today.

We like the sound of choice and freedom of information. As long as our Hershey bars still taste like our childhood dreams, we’re cool.

Hershey’s is claiming that its customers have requested that it shrink the size of its chocolate bars, as well as change the ingredients. But I think that, in reality, the company is just trying to save money, by making them smaller, and switching to cheaper, lower quality ingredients. The writer of this article thinks the readers are dumb enough to fall for these lies, but the comments in the comment section prove otherwise.

the changes were inspired by things like luxury taxes on cans of coke, government being responsible for everyone’s health (and therefore eating habits), and any of a dozen other health fascist impulses.

Hershey has always been a poor man’s Cadbury.

But they don’t. Not even close to those 5 cent Hershey bars of the 1960s that I remember. And now they will just be smaller.

As my Swiss buddy used to say “Tastes like vax”. It took me a while to figure out what he meant when it said it was made with “pair-a-feen” ;-)

LOL. I am the furthest thing from a food snob, and that’s what I think of Hershey’s chocolate-brown wax.

The absolute best chocolate, IMHO, is LINDT.

Hershey is way down the list. I never buy it, so I don’t care what they do to their product.

I will bet a buck there is some government regulation either on the books or coming that is driving this change.

Something like “Any food over 200 calories per serving must (INSERT LIBERAL NANNY STATE LANGUAGE HERE)”

I always presumed ‘new coke’ was just a gimmick to a) introduce a new product with the intent of retaining the old one, b) a low cost way to create ‘buzz’ and advertising.

Additionally, they will adjust the size of certain items.

You gotta love those marketing departments. Hershey is, in essence, increasing its prices by giving you less chocolate for the same price. How do they spin it? By claiming that is a move to make their chocolate bars more healthy by having less calories! LOL. That's great. By that logic, why don't they have you give Hershey $2.00 and they'll just give you a wrapper. That's the most healthy chocolate bar of all.

Kidding aside, I hate these marketing campaigns that make candy and other junk food more healthy. If you are eating chocolate, you aren't being healthy, period. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are eating a healthy chocolate bar. Just eat the real thing but limit your intake of candy. Control yourself. Don't eat it all the time. You don't need Hershey or McDonalds to make their food more "healthy." Just control how much of it you eat.

I agree, it’s about saving money. They are trying to tell us that people want to cut down on calories but still buy king size candy bars? I would like that too but I don’t expect Hershey to do it for me.

It already tells you that on the label, you idiot.

Of course in America they’re the same thing (Hershey bought American Cadbury in 1988). And non-American Cadbury is owned by Kraft, so not much difference really.
