Trump may drop request for border wall funding in spending bill
American Thinker ^ | 04/25/2017 | Rick Moran

Facing bi-partisan opposition to including funds to build a wall along the US southern border in the spending bill to keep the government operating past this weekend, President Trump told a group of conservative media representatives that he may drop his insistence for the wall funding if it will help pass the legislation.

Bloomberg:

"On funding the border wall, Trump said he could get it this week or the administration could come back to it in September," Trey Yingst, a White House correspondent for One America News, reported in a tweet. A White House official who asked for anonymity confirmed what Trump said during the private meeting.

Democrats, whose votes will be needed to help pass the spending plan, hope he’ll blink to avoid an embarrassing milestone for a new president trying to prove he can govern. A partial shutdown would start on Saturday, Trump’s 100th day in office.

"The President’s comments this evening are welcome news given the bipartisan opposition to the wall, and the obstacle it has been to the continuing bipartisan negotiations in the appropriations committees," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. "It’s time for Congress to act to make it clear that government will remain open for the American people."

Democrats are united in their opposition to including any funding for a border wall in the bill. They are also opposing a measure that would cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Republicans will need at least some Democrats to vote for the funding bill in order to avoid a government shut down since some House conservatives are balking at the price tag.

“I wouldn’t risk a trillion-dollar funding bill for a $3 billion wall,”

The Republicans just may be a doomed party.

They have a well developed talent for snatching defeat fom the jaws of victory.

I am beginning to believe that there is only one road to victory against progressives, thanks to our spineless RINOs, and that road is not a pleasant one.

......”What has happened to Trump’s promises?”.....

Too early to have such a question in light of what he’s already done and what’s on the table he’s contending with....give him the room he needs to pull it all off well....100 days is not enough with a Republican Congress dragging their feet. Put the problem where it belongs.

Fake News? Trump just tweeted that!

President Trump on Tuesday assured the American people that he has not changed his mind about building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, although he asserted on Monday that he is willing to wait until the fall for Congress to approve funding for the project.

“Don’t let the fake media tell you that I have changed my position on the WALL,” Trump tweeted. “It will get built and help stop drugs, human trafficking etc.”

The Secure Fence Act of 2006

The Secure Fence Act of 2006, which was passed by a Republican Congress and signed by President George W. Bush, authorized about 700 miles of fencing along certain stretches of land between the border of the United States and Mexico.

The act also authorized the use of more vehicle barriers, checkpoints and lighting to curb illegal immigration, and the use of advanced technology such as satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles.

At the time the act was being considered, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer were all members of the Senate. (Schumer of New York is now the Senate minority leader.)

Obama, Clinton, Schumer and 23 other Democratic senators voted in favor of the act when it passed in the Senate by a vote of 80 to 19.

Originally, the act called on the Department of Homeland Security to install at least two layers of reinforced fencing along some stretches of the border. That was amended later, however, through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008, which got rid of the double-layer requirement.

Currently, 702 miles of fencing separates the United States from Mexico, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

~snip~

Mulvaney said that Obama, Schumer and Clinton voted for a border wall in 2006.

They did vote for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which authorized building a fence along about 700 miles of the border between the United States and Mexico.

Trump can build the wall with the military if needed.

Remember: "Read my lips - no new taxes."

Bush made a deal with the Dems - he agreed to raise taxes, they promised to cut spending.

But what really happened? The demons increased spending and all we heard from the demons and the media (redunancy alert!) was - "Bush said "read my lips ..."

They are liars; they are despicable; they are EVIL.

DO NOT AGREE WITH THEM - EVER!

This is on us. We’re the ones who keep re-electing these spineless RINOs. 2018 needs to be the time when we give Trump 216 Congressmen who share our views and support his agenda. He shouldn’t have to be dragging the GOP to support the wall / 0care repeal, they should be there already.

Let’s start with Ryan and use 2018 to rebuild the GOP with people who’ll have Trump’s back.

Trump stand strong on this issue.

Shut the government down, if need be. Do NOT back down on this.

“What has happened to Trump’s promises?”

Why do you people keep just reacting to these stories with these stupid posts?

You people just ignore everything he has done, and then all it takes is some AP blurb to get passed around for you guys to just fall out like babies.

He’s been in office barely 100 damn days, and you guys act as if 100% of every damn thing needs to have been accomplished RIGHT NOW or else Trump was actually LYING to you or something.

Why on Earth cant the Democrats be cursed with flaky voters like this?

Gays voted for Obama TWICE and it took until 2014 until the dude endorsed gay marriage!

100 days in and a 2000 mile physical damn wall not fully completed cause conservatives to whine that “Trump isnt keeping his promises”.

Seriously some of you need to get a %^$^#^@ grip.

Yep, Trump just needs to shut the government down.

It’s a win either way for him that way!

I suspect he is finding running the government is a lot harder than running a business.

You can’t treat it the same.

Just look at what it takes to fire people in the govt.

Just look at the VA employees who stole $400K. Do they still have a job???

Someone said here that there is an EO from decades ago that could actually be rescinded to get a better grip on firing people.
