Walked into the store carrying a human head, a knife and covered in blood.

‘appears to be the suspect’.

If...

Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And - which is more - you’ll be a Man my son!

[Why do people see a tragedy like this and make comical remarks about it?]

It is a reflex response to the vulnerability of American citizens because of our government system.

Well, allegedly, anyway. I guess they hold off on saying anything more definite, even when it is obvious, until the coroner signs off on it.

“Think of what the United States was like in the 1950s & look around today.”

In the 1950’s Ed Gein was was killing people, making skin masks and keeping vulvas in a shoe box.

There has always been sick people.

I’ve always found that disturbing, too.

Think of what the United States was like in the 1950s & look around today....total collapse on most every important metric.

I don't agree with the word "total", I would say "substantial." Substantial collapse on most every important metric.

But don't forget, in the 1950s, we had just emerged from a brutal crucible of cultural/military competition, as the clear and obvious winner. That competition made us what we were, and took us too the moon, literally.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, we've had no competition, and it shows. We are physically obese, covered with useless fat, and we are also morally and culturally obese. Instead of great public intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century, we have flabby virtue signaling and the likes of Oprah and Ellen driving the popular conversation.

Our culture is fat because it sees no reason to be fit.

The biggest gift the Asian world can give us is to be a strong competitor.

We'll go back to the moon when the Chinese are on the moon.

We'll go to Mars when it looks like the China, or India, is going to go to Mars.

That's how it works.

You know the beautiful Thompson's Gazelle?

Have you seen films of them jumping so gracefully, their herds moving across Africa by the thousands?

You know why they are so beautiful? Why they move so fast and so gracefully?

Because they are at the cutting edge of a brutal fight for survival. Because the Tommy that doesn't move quite as fast as the rest becomes dinner for one of Africa's many predators.

So in a very real sense, "no lion, no gazelle." This is true for human culture too.

It’s called “gallows humor,” a defense mechanism against the horrible and insane, and it has been human nature forever.

‘appears to be the suspect’.

I can imagine a person from the Founding times of this country grabbing the writer of that line and slapping the teeth out of their face.

Heck, even someone from well into the 20th century would do the same thing...

#19: It’s called “Morgue Humor”.

If you haven’t been seriously injured/wounded, or dead (I was for a short time, cardiac arrest), you won’t understand it. A way of getting away from the horror of these crimes.

Not for the squemish. (No, that is not an Oregon/Washington State Indian tribe. That is Squamish).
