6 things to watch in the Montana special election

Washington (CNN) A race for an open House seat in Montana took a jaw-dropping twist when a reporter alleged that Republican candidate Greg Gianforte "body slammed" him and broke his glasses on the eve of Election Day.

Late Wednesday night, the Gallatin County Sheriff's department charged Gianforte with misdemeanor assault. The latest news came just ahead of an already much-anticipated special congressional election in the Big Sky state that pitted a folk-singing Democrat with a spotty financial past against a well-known Republican millionaire and businessman.

Republican Gianforte and Democrat Rob Quist face off Thursday to replace former Rep. Ryan Zinke, who President Donald Trump tapped to lead the Department of Interior. Before Wednesday night, Gianforte was viewed as the favorite in a fairly red state, where a Democrat hasn't held the congressional seat in two decades -- but the race is closer than many would have anticipated months ago, and the alleged physical encounter had many wondering if Gianforte might have changed the course of the race overnight.

Montana voters have surprised before. While the state overwhelmingly elected Trump by 20 points in November, they also have a populist streak and re-elected Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock over Gianforte just six months ago.

Here are six things to watch for tonight in the Montana special.

How much does the late allegation that Gianforte "body slammed" a reporter matter?

In Montana, any eligible voter can vote absentee. That means that a large number of votes in the Montana special election have already been cast. Any impact that Gianforte's alleged actions would have now would only impact the narrow slice of Montana voters who were planning to actually vote at the polls Thursday.

The elephant in the room not mentioned in the article is the way the GOP has been treating President Trump since his nomination/election.

The hostility of the GOP-e toward President Trump has not gone unnoticed, and may yet sink anticipated 2018 Republican gains in both chambers of Congress.

Just wondering if the Democrat mentioned infanticide..... or mercy killing of the disabled..... as a winning issue?

Dumbos just lost a race---in Omaha---the race that got caught in the abortion debate.

DNC Perez recently declared abortion-on-demand is Democrats' ticket to victory.

So if that's not working, it figures desperate Dems might be looking at infanticide....perhaps mercy killing of the disabled...... for winning issues.

============================================

In Kansas couple weeks ago, Repub Estes won by a commanding eight points; then Dumbo Ossoff in GA failed to prevent a runoff...even after every prog/Dumbo and his second cousin from East Overshoe, USA, gave Ossoff some 10 million dollars.

Earlier Democrats lost again b/c they failed to flip Zero Seats in Four Blue State Special Elections. Those total Democrat humiliations by the Russians occurred right after DNC genius Tom Perez bragged Democrats would show that that "resistance to Trump" could be translated into electoral victories.

To add insult to injury, the Minnesota, Connecticut, Virginia Democrat losses are the states the Russians threw to Hillary in the 2016 presidential election.

Go figure.

I don’t know the candidate or the reporter...but I would imagine that body-slamming a liberal reporter would be a plus with Montana voters. :)

CNN is setting up the talking point that a close lose for the Dem is still a victory against Trump.

I doubt that the candidate simply walked over to the reporter and attacked him. I am guessing that it was a reaction to something (probably physical) that the reporter did. What was it?

In order to be elected to the gang of criminals in Congress, I’d say body slamming a wimpish damnocrat is a definite plus.

Gianforte "body slammed" a reporter

Personally, I'd like to do MUCH, MUCH more to some "reporters" than just body slam them, so if I could vote in this election, he'd get my vote! We need more guys in congress like this, not the wimpy assholes like Paul Ryno!

Yep - the GOPe seems almost as dismayed at Trump's winning as the Dims - clean that part of the swamp and we may have a chance.

Need to find some solid conservative replacements and go all-in supporting them. We need to be ready to dig deep into our own pockets if we want all the successes Trump opened the door for.

I just had a good laugh reading a report about the altercation between the candidate and the reporter. It said, “he was asking a question about healthcare, and was sent to the hospital and later released”. Lol!
