The man was a soldier in ISIS. He made his choice. He came from a culture where lots of people make such choices.
It is for Muslims to fix their culture. There may always be some small number of people who succumb to mental illness and go off on a killing spree. Charles Manson. Potentially, this is everybody. In actuality, it isn’t.

In the US Army, only a small percentage of soldiers actually fight in combat. The majority are support, in someway, be it logistic, medical, administrative, etc.
This majority is like the Islamic world, and that majority are still soldiers and still have uniforms.
Just because only a small percentage of Muslims are “warfighters” doesn’t mean the so-called “moderates” are not also still soldiers for Islam.
