Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has called for the federal government to pull its permit for an alt-right protest scheduled for next Sunday, June 4.
"Trump Free Speech Rally Portland" is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at federally controlled Terry Schrunk Plaza in downtown Portland.
Another protest called #MarchAgainstSharia is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, also at the Terry Schrunk Plaza.
Joey Gibson, a Vancouver resident and video blogger, is organizing both gatherings. He has invited Kyle Chapman, an online celebrity known as "Based Stickman," to the June 4 rally. Chapman was arrested at a Berkeley, California rally earlier this year on charges of suspected felony assault when he allegedly hit a left-wing protester in the head with a signpost.
"My concern is they're coming here to peddle a message of hatred and bigotry," Wheeler said in a news conference Monday. "They have a First Amendment right to speak, but hate speech is not protected."

Freedom for me; but not for thee
Perhaps the IGNORANT MAYOR is unaware of the fact the the FIRST AMENDMENT is precisely for the protection so called “HATE SPEECH”!
So-called “hate speech” IS specifically protected by the qst Amendment.
Since when does the fed gov issue permits for gatherings in cities?
The mayor wants the fed gov to stop it...
So the commies now want to define “hate speech”
That is, speech with which they disagree
Wheeler is a total idiot. Even someone only familiar with popular culture knows that the most famous free speech case in American history was about NAZIs (actual self-proclaimed NAZIs having the right to march in Skokie, Illinois.
The only generally accented limitation to free speech is that which is encouraging imminent violence or harm, the classic example being “yelling fire in a crowded theater.”
The ignorant mayor is completely wrong about American law. He’s talking about the law Tards like him would like.
....a message of hatred and bigotry....
Who gave that creep the right to define what is “hatred and bigotry”? PHOOEY!!!!
He’s the Mayor. He can pull the permits.
Actually, it is.
Federal property.
How about, NO!
Either its a valid issue or it is not. If the 1st Amendment applies so does the 10th. He is an idiot.
The mayor needs to be arrested for making this hateful statement.
The plaza where the rally will take place is a federally controlled venue, city permits are not needed.
That is not a coincidence either.
This myth that you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater really bugs me. People use it as an example very, very often and it is a lie.
There is absolutely no question that, assuming you physically have the ability to speak, that you can yell the word “fire” in a crowded theater. You may, or may not suffer some consequences for it, but you certainly can do it.
Off hand, I can think of many examples where you can yell fire in a crowded theater with no negative consequences.
Obviously, if there is indeed a fire, then by all means shout it out.
But suppose there is no fire. The theater is crowded and people are waiting for a movie to start. Go up front and shout, “May I have your attention please...I was sitting here with my friend and he claimed that I can’t yell fire in a crowded theater. Did you notice? I just did.” Or, similarly you could announce to crowded patrons, “Please be aware of the nearest exit in case of fire or other emergency.” Notice, the word “fire” was in the sentence. Or, maybe you’re an actor on stage, the theater is crowded and your character is supposed to shout “Fire!” because of the situation in the play.
Anyway, you get the idea. You CAN shout fire in a crowded theater. I wish people wouldn’t use the notion that you can’t as an example of restricted speech, because it is false.
Especially when said so-called “hate speech” is really political speech that the Left disagrees with.
