Hawaii Just Became The First US State To Pass A Bill Supporting Basic Income (UBI)

Innovation and forward-thinking may be Hawaii's two biggest exports in 2017.

Earlier this month, the state earned the distinction of being the first in the U.S. to formally accept the provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement after President Donald Trump decided to withdraw the nation from it, and now, Hawaii is taking the lead in embracing yet another innovative idea: universal basic income (UBI).

On June 15, Hawaii state representative Chris Lee wrote a Reddit post about House Concurrent Resolution 89, a bill he says he introduced in order to "start a conversation about our future." According to Lee, "After much work and with the help of a few key colleagues, it passed both houses of the State Legislature unanimously."

(snip)

The bill has two major provisions. First, it declares that all families in Hawaii are entitled to basic financial security. "As far as I'm told, it's the first time any state has made such a pronouncement," wrote Lee. The second provision establishes a number of government offices "to analyze our state's economy and find ways to ensure all families have basic financial security, including an evaluation of different forms of a full or partial universal basic income."

The congressman thanked "redditors" in his post, as he said the site became his first resource in considering UBI, and added a Reddit-standard TL;DR at the end: "The State of Hawaii is going to begin evaluating universal basic income."

"all families in Hawaii are entitled to basic financial security"

That ought to attract many low-life, POS Muslims.

That sounds great - maybe a bunch of low-life freeloaders will leave Texas and move there - win / win!

Who would want to go live in Hawaii and do nothing and do it on government money? What could go wrong?

Hawaii soon to be following Puerto Rico into bankruptcy. Idiots.

‘Hey man, if we raise the floor (basic income) what will stop retailers, utilities, internet and cable providers, restaurants, supermarkets, and anyone else from raising the ceiling? Hello?’

*crickets*

They have an entire ocean keeping them from most of the homeless that will invade.

But invade they shall — it will take time, but invade they shall.

College students whose last financial aid dollars will be a one way ticket there and a surfboard. Street windshield washers who can put together a few hundred for super-saver fares. The self-entitled, the lazy, the criminals, the dregs.

Invade they shall.

Hawaii will become as inviting as downtown San Francisco. Honolulu is already an armpit, this will make it a butt crack.

Invade they shall.

There are 50,000 homeless in Los Angeles alone who we can send to Hawaii.

What do you want to bet that this program would NOT ultimately demand federal funding, i.e. from the rest of us?

You will be hearing a steady drumbeat about this concept for the next few years. This (UBI) will be a big issue due to heavy immigration of low to no skills people, and due to machines taking a certain number of jobs away from people.
Very soon, some people will begin saying UBI should be a right, a concept that goes against the grain for many western countries built on capitalism.

Perhaps States in the union should take the computer paradigm of the “stack”. Using LIFO.

Proof the Paris scam has nothing to do with weather, and really is a front for a socialist agenda

Article is somewhat misleading. It is not a bill. It’s a resolution, which in legis-speak is a statement of opinions or, in this case, wishes. About as realistic as a letter to Santa Claus.

In Des Moines we’d frequently ship homeless bums to Miami on a one-way Greyhound bus ticket. Being at the intersection of 35 and 80 we got more than our fair share.

There, I fixed it!

Note to HI: Last time I checked you guys can't print money. Your state is so screwed.
