My janitorial lady at my office building said she was told by her priest it was a sin to read the Bible.

Someone is clearly not telling the whole truth here. Devoutly reading the holy Scriptures, far from being a sin, has an indulgence attached to it. In fact, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has the Bible right on their website.

Reading a corrupted version of the Bible, like the JW's New World Translation for example, in preference to a legitimate Catholic translation, would perhaps be a sin.

At one time the Catholic Church did not encourage it. "Let our learned theologians interpret it for you" or somesuch. The Priest at my mother's funeral referred to this. She read the Bible constantly, and the Priest remarked that "at the time she came of age this was not something that the Church encouraged."

Especially since the modern day translators JWs version on the Bible went into hiding. The JWs would not allow them to answer questions concerning their blasphemous translation.

BTW: I would highly recommend reading a book by David Hunt called “A Woman Rides the Beast”. It is highly researched and everything is documented with footnotes. I have read it myself.

The problem that I see with objecting to reading the Bible ‘on your own authority’ is thus:

What happens when the ‘church authority’ has become corrupted? There is good evidence that’s happened now, in part at least.

How are you supposed to defend against that? I know that in my own non-Catholic experience, pastors and congregations are supposed to work together to keep each other in line on the words of God. But apparently there’s no such check or balance in Rome, far as I can tell.

I assume it has the officially approved higher critical, evolutionist, JEPD commentary.

Reading a corrupted version of the Bible . . . in preference to a legitimate Catholic translation, would perhaps be a sin.

You mean one that doesn't have the higher critical, evolutionist, JEPD commentary?
