The European Union has fined Google €2.42bn (£2.14bn) after a seven-year investigation into claims the technology giant abused its internet search monopoly.

The penalty is the biggest ever competition fine from the European Commission, doubling the previous record handed to Intel in 2009.

Google sent the EU after Microsoft. It is nice to see them hoisted on their own petard.

internet search “monopoly”

huh?

that’s literally not possible.

I can use ANY of dozens of other search engines ANYTIME I wish for free. There is ZERO google can do to keep me from using a competitors search engine like Bing.

Actually it is. If they have a "practical monopoly" due to market position, it is a monopoly in fact. Just because you can and do smartly use some minority search engine that is available does not absolve them of their +90% market position in search engine use because everyone else ignorantly defaults to Google search.

Good. Google is becoming an increasingly brazen threat to our system of governance. Google needs to be broken apart. It’s too big and it has too much control over what people see.

what are you talking about?

you literally have to jump hoops to NOT use the built in Microsoft Search engine!

Anyone using anything but Bing had to go out of their way to use it.

This fine is only about a weeks worth of revenue for Google.

Exactly. Google are no saints but this sort of EU extortion is exactly why Brexit occurred.

In fact, the EU seems to be squirreling cash away for the day when they can no longer soak the UK.

Yup. Google, Youtube and Microsoft pushing hard-left and gay agendas in everyone's face; they contribute millions annually to leftist and gay activities as part of their regular policy, more so than any other tech companies.

[A] "practical monopoly" due to market position, . . is a monopoly in fact.

Incorrect. A monopoly is the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service. A search monopoly exists when a company or person has exclusive possession or control of the supply of a search engine. No one, not even Google or the EU, has exclusive possession or supply of search engines.

Just because you can and do smartly use some minority search engine that is available does not absolve [Google] of [its] +90% market position in search engine use because everyone else ignorantly defaults to Google search.

Search engine use is not tantamount to search enginee supply. Google is but one of numerous companies supplying Internet search engines to consumers. Google's so-called market position is, as acknowledged above, a product of consumer use and not search engine supply.

Google needs no absolution from consumer choice in a market of competing and available search engines. The ability to use a search engine encompasses the lesser included ability to choose a search engine. Consumers' choice of a search engine, whether a smart one of a "minority" search engine or an "ignorant" one of a search engine by default, is still a choice.

Google's market position is the result of consumer free choice among multiple search engines, not a forced choice of the only available search engine in the market. The term monopoly, as defined and applied by reasonable adults, does not apply to companies who achieve market position based on consumer use in the arena of choice and free enterprise. In short, Google's position in the search engine market does not exist because of any exclusive supply or control of available nsearch engines (i.e., monopoly) but rather, because of consumers' free choice among the multitude of available search engine.

The real theme here is to extort money from U.S. companies who do business in eurapeeing countries. This is the sort of thing the Ruskies have been accused of doing. I guess the corrupt legal system practice is moving into the West.
