Rent increases, evictions up in immigrant communities under Trump, housing lawyers say
Sacramento Bee ^ | July 10, 2017 | Angela Hart

When Maria got an eviction notice telling her she had to be out of her Redwood City apartment by late February, she thought something seemed fishy.

She contacted housing attorneys, who confirmed to her landlord that the notice was not served legally and she didn’t have to move out right away.

Her landlord responded with a text message threatening to call immigration authorities on Maria if she didn’t comply, saying it was a “duty” to report anyone who is undocumented.

State Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, said he isn’t surprised tensions are running high. He said the state shouldn’t “protect illegal immigrants and keep them in housing when we’re trying to find housing for legal residents.”

All we hear about here in California is the housing crisis. Maybe if several million illegal aliens headed out of Dodge some housing stock might open up.

How do you legally serve notice to someone here illegally?

You can’t pick and choose what laws you agree to support.

How do you legally serve notice to someone here illegally?

That sounds like a question that is capable of tying-up our entire Federal court system for the next thirteen years.

California wants to take in several million illegals but makes it too difficult to build additional housing. These limbs defy logic.

“Backing up lawyers’ reports with specific data is difficult. No agencies track data on the reasons people are evicted or loss of housing due to someone’s immigration status.”

More fake news.

“Rent increases, evictions up in immigrant communities “

You mean illegal immigrant. I haven’t heard of anything happening in little Havana or Chinatown.

With increased ICE activity, landlords may be worried about what happens if it can be shown that they knew their tenants were illegals.

8 U.S. Code § 1324 - Bringing in and harboring certain aliens

A case can be made that a landlord knowingly renting to an illegal is harboring illegals. If I was the property owner, I would not want to risk federal attention.

Silly and misleading opening premise.

Blackmail is blackmail and is illegal but that has no bearing on enforcement of the law which the illeagal alien is ultimately breaking.

RE:”Maria Estrada said she and her family were forced out of their Oakland apartment after her landlord threatened to call immigration agents.
“He (said) he’s going to report us to ICE,” Estrada said. “Any car we saw stop in front of the place, we couldn’t even go back to sleep because we (were) scared. Every time he would stop by the house and talk to us, he’d say ICE is going to pick you up ... when we hear that, we’d run away for the whole day.”
Estrada, 56, is in the country legally, but some in her family are not.
“I was worried what would happen to them, and for me, too,” she said. “I’m not a criminal.”

Not only are they hungry because they are scared to get their food stamps but now their rent is going up and they are too worried about deportation to sleep.

Deporting the illegals will bring the rents down. It’s a win-win!

There is limited housing.

A tech job boom in the San Francisco Bay Area has raised rents and home ownership prices for years.

....How do you legally serve notice to someone here illegally...

Just like illegals can be searched legally during a police stop while here illegally.
They can be arrested legally while here legally.
And they can be deported legally while here illegally.

Estimates show California is home to roughly 2.5 million undocumented immigrants.

Ha! There are probably that many in the LA metro area alone.
