Motorcycle ride, rally planned to support ‘Taps’ in Glen Rock

More than 1,200 bikers are expected to ride into the Glen Rock area on Wednesday to support a local resident’s daily playing of “Taps.”

Riders, who hail from Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, plan to arrive at Freedom Armory in Springfield Township near Glen Rock around 7 p.m., just as July’s Glen Rock Borough Council meeting is getting started, organizer Ryan Walton said.

“Taps” will once again be a topic of discussion at the meeting as the council considers the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania’s request to lift the borough’s restriction of the song. The ACLU threatened a federal lawsuit earlier this month if the borough does not oblige.

While some residents had complained of the noise, supporters of "Taps" both locally and beyond have defended Joshua Corney's right to play it.

Things grew particularly heated in June after the council determined the daily playing of the song from an outdoor sound system was in violation of the borough’s nuisance ordinance.

The council originally limited the number of days the song could be played to Sundays and flag holidays, but later agreed not to take enforcement action until the matter could be discussed further.

As an Army veteran, Walton, who now lives in Carroll County, Maryland, said he enjoyed hearing the song when he lived in York County and is eager to bring veterans from three states together to show their support.

“I think we have an opportunity to … catapult forward and show patriotism at a time when we definitely need it,” he said.

After the 57-second song finished, scattered applause could be heard from the front lawn of Joshua Corney's property.

Riders will arrive in Littlestown around 4:45 p.m. and travel through Gettysburg and downtown York before ending at the armory near Glen Rock. They plan to ride past the York County Judicial Center on North George Street around 6 or 6:15 p.m.

A rally will follow at the armory around 7 p.m.

The event was created for non-borough residents who want to show their support but can’t attend the borough council meeting, according to the event description on Facebook.

“This will allow a large group to show their support while leaving the town center less congested for borough residents,” the description states.

Borough residents are also invited to attend after the meeting.

Several people, including Walton, are scheduled to speak about support for veterans and “Taps” around 8 p.m., Walton said. Food vendors will be on site throughout the event, and “Taps” will be played.

“It’s a patriotic moment for the community,” he said.

Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs. No restroom facilities will be available at the armory.

Good for him - I love listening to a bugler play Taps.
The film "From Here to Eternity" has a great scene with Pruitt (Montgomery Clift) playing it at Scofield Barracks for his dead friend, Maggio (Frank Sinatra).

Maybe the council and the aclu would rather hear the call to prayer six times a day.

A little off-topic... but that’s one heckuva lot of decorations for a Navy LT!

Earlier stories have reported his rank as Lieutenant Commander.

Photo doesn't show the skinny bar on the shoulder boards. According to the photo he's a LT Senior Grade, O-3. I think the Navy is handing out a lot of "I was there" ribbons these days. Saw a midshipman down at BWI airport that had 3 rows -- and he didn't look old enough to have been "prior enlisted".

One thing you may not know is that when you are not wearing medals (just ribbons) all of the ribbons that would be on your right side (campaign ribbons) are added to the collection on your left.

Another factor, as far as I can see, is that the officer is Surface Warfare qualified, meaning he "drives ships." A given sea assignment make take in several areas where campaign ribbons are awarded. (I have only one, but I was in the Reserves)

Explains a lot. Thanks! Probably also explains the midshipman’s ribbons. He probably got 1 or 2 from his Youngster Cruise, and a couple more for other Summer training.

Back when I was in the Firsties had Vietnam Service ribbons. Everybody else was ‘clean’ unless they were prior enlisted.

When did this change happen. I have never heard of being allowed to wear unit citation ribbons anywhere except on the right side.

I think you're correct. I was just guessing on the "why." A closer exam of the medals might give a better idea. I don't recognize many of them. I only have the usual active and reserve "participation" medals; a NAM from Desert Storm/Shield and a pistol Expert. My father was most proud of the "Expert" medal!

Lighten up, Glen Rock Borough, it doesn’t last long...even if you are annoyed.

As well should you be. Hard well earned badge in the service. Of course it makes for high expectation when you take the grandkids out target shooting. A lot of hooting when you miss going on, but I can still wipe the floor with them at the range even after 50 years. I use my mini30 with ring peep sights and outshoot the whippersnappers with their cheap scopes.

Sadly, I'm only really deadly with the pistols. My Dad was the gunner - snap shooter with shotgun, deer slayer with rifle.

He used to shoot sparrow for bounty, as a boy; he got a nickle from the county to keep the birds away from stored crops. He used a .22, he said, and one round cost 1 cent, so he said he got good to keep the profits up!
