With all eyes on health care in recent weeks, U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has introduced his latest legislation seeking to repeal the Jones Act.
Senator McCain first introduced the legislation, known as the Open Americas Waters Act of 2017, last Thursday, one day before he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye. The Senator has since been recovering at this home in Arizona and is said to be in good condition as doctors await tissue pathology reports.
The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, aka the Jones Act, requires that all goods shipped between ports in the United States be transported on American-built ships that are owned and operated by Americans.

I guess we would have to ask the Chinese about the benefits of a free and open market.
Does this bill do an favors for Ukraine, Lockheed Martin, Soros? I don’t want anything this sick jerk wants.
Don’t be messin’ with my retirement now. (LM) LOL!
I'd be in favor of modifying it, but not repealing it. Every provision of the Jones Act should still be in place for interior waterways of the U.S. But I see no reason why it can't be repealed for vessels operating routes between seaports where most of the port calls are being made by foreign-flagged vessels anyway.
It cost something like ten times more to ship a container from the U.S. to Hawaii than to ship it to China -- even if the ship to Asia sails right past Hawaii!
Basically means that you’d be able to board an Alaska Cruise in Seattle and not have to ride the bus to Vancouver so that the Panamanian-flagged cruise ship can comply.
Rome is burning here and McCain is devoting his energies to THIS???
Didn’t the Jones Act prevent other countries from helping the U.S. in cleaning up the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?
If he wants to repeal something worthwhile, repeal Davis-Bacon Act of 1931.....................
I hope the medical professionals demand he retire.
Best for everyone
Doubt it is even being enforced.
We know that McKeeting is for sale to the highest bidder.
I wonder who it is this time?
Some claimed it did, but foreign flagged ships did help with the clean up.
The Jones act holds together the shreds of our maritime and shipbuilding industry. Other countries have always subsidized their steel and shipbuilding industry and will gladly take over. They would be happy to build and repair our naval vessels as well. A super carrier built by Hyundai would be just peachy and cheaper. Sarc
Many believe the Jones act destroyed the US Merchant Marine, with a typical, bureaucratic, government-managed protectionist set of rules
Kind of like Obamacare of the sea transport business.
Is this the act that does not allow foreign airlines to stop TWICE in the U.S on their way to the next country? The island of Guam would benefit as Asian airlines tend to go there often.
But it would get better gas mileage.................
Let’s see. Arizona is landlocked. Not exactly huge on international trade or trade between states by waterborne commerce. McLame is spinator from Arizona paid to represent the interests of the citizens of the state who elected him.
Why the hell does he have anything to do with the Jones act repeal? Another campaign “contribution” to be taken care of? I guess the appearance of a conflict of interest does not make any impression on him at all.
Someone is probably donating some huge $$$ to his campaign for this. It's always about the Benjamins...................
The cruise thing... right. Sailing directly between Hawaii and Los Angeles, which is a straight line, ships must go to Mexico at some point along the way to comply with The Jones Act. We had to stop in Escondido on our return leg. Ridiculous.
I believe the President of the United States can grant waivers to foreign-flagged vessels in the event of a disaster or national emergency.
It also means that the glut of oil stored in Houston could be shipped to refineries on the east coast that are under supplied because the pipelines can't keep up.
