Vegetable prices may be going up soon, as a shortage of migrant workers is resulting in lost crops in California. Farmers say they're having trouble hiring enough people to work during harvest season, causing some crops to rot before they can be picked. Already, the situation has triggered losses of more than $13 million in two California counties alone, according to NBC News.
The ongoing battle about U.S. immigration policies is blamed for the shortage. The vast majority of California's farm workers are foreign born, with many coming from Mexico. However, the PEW Research Center reports more Mexicans are leaving the U.S. than coming here.

We have specific immigration allowances for migrant farm labor. Perhaps if California cracked down on Illegal Aliens collecting welfare there would be more people available to pick the crops.

I’ve lived in this valley for decades and this is the farmers and their distributors bitching about having to pay the Mexicans more than the normal pittance.
This is a non issue.
Millions of people who are healthy collecting welfare sitting home doing nothing.
You can bet these farmers will now write off the crops and get disaster aid from their crop insurance. Quite a racket. So the taxpayers will eat the cost no matter what

Growing up in Wisconsin, we Rural Kids either de-tassled corn or trimmed Christmas Trees in the summer months.
The, ‘cool’ City Kids worked at the Pool or at the Dairy Queen (Ice Cream) or the A&W Drive-In (Hamburgers, Root Beer and Cute Girls on Roller Skates taking your order).

I call BS. Why can’t the farmworkers get green cards to work here like they did before. What’s the matter, they don’t want to make money anymore? They can’t get green cards anymore? I didn’t realize that had changed.
