In his January 1964 State of the Union address, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed, “This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America.”

In the 50 years since that time, U.S. taxpayers have spent over $22 trillion on anti-poverty programs.

The worst “solutions” (War on Poverty/Great Society, War on Drugs, etc.) all just turned into government jobs mills for liberals. Public education and the criminal justice system have become huge industries unto themselves - and nobody collecting a paycheck is in any rush to fix things in either area.

What really brought it to a head was that money ran out for both; the taxpayers have been bled dry.
