Theories Abound Over Meaning of Trump’s ‘Many Sides’ Remark
New York Times ^ | August 15, 2017 | JEREMY W. PETERS

There is no shortage of theories about why President Trump was so cagey in blaming “many sides” for the white supremacist-fueled violence in Virginia.

Some suggested the president did not want to alienate whites who voted for him out of a sense of racial grievance. Others said he was offering his white nationalist supporters a wink and a nod. Yet another concluded advisers like Stephen K. Bannon must be influencing the president in dark ways.

But there is an alternate explanation, one that is espoused by many on the right...

In this version, a violent and dangerous left fringe is ignored by news media that would rather elevate far-right extremism as the nation’s more urgent threat. This view of the left as unhinged and anarchistic has become popular with some Republicans who insist that Democrats still refuse to accept Mr. Trump. They seek to stoke powerful emotions behind perceptions of excessive political correctness and media bias.

In his reluctance to pin the blame on any one element of the protests, Mr. Trump seems to have concluded what many other conservatives did about the tragedy in Charlottesville, Va.: As tragic as it was, it was incited by a small, unrepresentative group of bigots purporting to speak for the right whose antics would be exhaustively covered in the news.

“They think there were 300 or so racists who showed up to a rally, and who got exactly what they wanted: Violence, and violence in a way that inspires the nation’s elite to double down on iconoclasm in a way they hope grows their movement,” said Ben Domenech, the publisher of The Federalist, an online magazine.

A headline on The Federalist on Monday summed up that sentiment: “White Supremacists Were Not the Only Thugs Tearing Up Charlottesville.”

Yes, democrats like you. It's President Trump, not Mr. Trump.

LOL What’s “Confusing” about it?

The denial that Antifa and blm are bigoted, hate, and armed organizations is just amazing, isn’t it?

The bias in this who cluster is so blatantly obvious. Antifa et al brings bats, bricks, etc and NOT A WORD of condemnation or acknowledgement

And if a Trump supporter or “White Nationalist” would have been killed, the Slimes would have gone “well, he deserved it”

I wonder if the “many sides” language came from Bannon which is why leaks say he’s in the doghouse.

I defend the President’s position to point out all the groups who participated in the violence; I don’t know if the remarks were as well crafted as they could have been. This President isn’t interested in being the Pastor in Chief as some would like him to be, so comforting language doesn’t come to him easily. When he speaks, somewhat extemporaneously, his words and demeanor anger many on the left. But they won’t be pleased anyway.

He was talking about solid geometry. The technical term is polyhedron.

He’s not a politician. And that’s why many voted for him.

Pres Trump condemned violence and racism by those on many sides.

Not hard to understand.

The opposite would be to say, “I only condemn violence and racism for some of the bad actors.”

The president has it right. Move on, NYT, it’s a boring discussion.

If one looks at the videos one clearly sees at least two sides clashing. I have read that the leftists started it. But regardless of who started it there were clearly at least two sides engaged in fights.

Are the democrats suggesting one side clashed with themselves?

I guess videos of “activists” throwing things, punching, hitting and destroying property are acts of love.

Clearly, the President said what he meant and meant what he said. There can only be ambiguity in an ambiguous mind.

There is more than passing interest in the possibility that this was a false flag by Soros and friends.

the white supremacist-fueled violence in Virginia

I love the NYT. It never lets facts get in the way of a good biased attack piece.

The Antifa folks (anti first amendment) were all carrying clubs. Was that a spontaneous revolution or did they brig the clubs with them?
