A Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning local time, the Navy said.
There were 10 sailors missing and five injured, the Navy said.
The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.

Malacca has pre-determined and assigned lanes, depending on the direction of transit.
It even has speed limits lol
This is incompetent seamanship, plain a simple.
POTUS needs to recall Comm 7th Flt and let him know he’s on the chopping block.
Hey, if someone is going to engage in absurd conjecture based on a total lack of knowledge, it may as well be you, right?
These are regular destroyers, these were considered elite combat ships. These commands were given as a reward good skippers not for someone trying to get the feed wet for the first time.
They would put them on a Spruce can before they could even be an XO on one of these.
And why is this happening in the Far East? Electronic warfare perhaps? Spoofing our radar? Are we too radar-dependent?

They were probably Texting on the bridge. Just kidding, but something ain’t right.
Texting?
Half way kidding.
“Time to get rid of incompetent USN captains.”
Maybe incompetent officers have been promoted because they were more likely to enthusiastically endorse the Navy’s reprehensible social engineering experiments.
That may be a long term trend but it doesn’t explain these rash East Asian incidences of the last seven months (including US guided-missile cruisers being hit by a South Korean fishing boat and running aground in Tokyo Bay).
Everyone's lights should be still on.
I think 10nm is a stretch but that aside... At night, multiple ships, small craft like fishing boats & coastal craft, flashing red/green/white nav aids and background shore lights it can be a confusing visual picture to get a handle on. Radar and AIS can assist in getting a handle on the critical lights to focus on. Also, as the Japanese demonstrated to the USN in WWII, it takes significant night training with the optics to be proficient with the eyeball.
Tough call for Trump and Mattis. If we leave Afghanistan completely, there is little doubt the Taliban will retake the country. Besides the many lives lost to retribution, there will be another refugee crisis. And Afghanistan will once again become a sanctuary for radical Islamic terrorists.
And then there is the problem of nuclear armed Pakistan that has its own Taliban problem. If the Taliban can topple the Pak government or cause widespread civil disorder, how will the nuclear weapons be protected? We know we can't trust the ISI, which kept the location of OBL a secret from us.
Trump/Mattis have done a risk assessment weighing the pros and cons of staying or leaving and what troop levels are needed to attain our objectives. The Afghan government must be onboard as well unlike what happened in Iraq.
US casualties in Afghanistan have been minimal in recent years, not to minimize the death or injury to any of our troops. One death is too many as far as their family and friends are concerned. So far, this year we have had 11 fatalities in and around Afghanistan, ten by hostile fire including three by green on blue. In 2016 there were 14 US fatalities, 10 due to hostile fire including two by green on blue.
If boats & ships were cars, it appears that our “car” was hit by another. Still shouldn’t have happened; but the way it’s stated in the media makes it sound as if we rammed into another vessel.
My question or comment maybe is, how is it our fault (except that we allowed it)? For it to have been our fault, wouldn’t our ship be sailing sideways? And with what speed and force to make that hole that huge?
This confuses me.
we have spent something like 700 Billion in tax dollars since our beginning in Afghan with about 2400 troops killed...after 17 years we have achieved nada...not worth it to continue.....definition of insane. This country was not founded on nation building....
“Not saying you are wrong, but GPS jamming is very difficult.
“
Actually, jamming GPS is pretty easy as it is a very weak radio signal broadcast from 25,000 mile altitude satellites. Spoofing GPS is hard, not jamming. Jamming is flooding the exact frequencies with high powered noise transmissions to drown out the GPS signal. Hence, zero GPS signal lock.
No, but realistically undoing 8 years of damage in 7 months is a unreasonable expectation.
Both the Captains of the Fitzgerald and the McCain served as XO of those ships before assuming command of those ships.
Benson did have a tour as CO of a minesweeper. Sanchez had no prior commands before becoming CO of McCain.
I believe this can be done with a highly directed laser that is properly modulated.
Depends on antenna design, but technically you are correct. I took the post to mean “spoofing” and didn’t point that out my bad. That said I am not sure what the current antenna design the Navy uses. Search results are not clear or conclusive. The Iraqis tried some Russian jammers to stop our military years ago. They were pretty ineffective - especially against JDAMs which have the antenna in the tail.
You don’t think the ship had brain cancer?
Well, in post #35 I projected this would be a 400 post thread.
Is that another example of how easily entertained you are?
You are wrong. Yes radar helps, but if nav lights confuse you, you have no business conning a ship.
