DVID reports on the damage sustained by the Navy vessel:

Damage to the portside is visible as the Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on Aug. 21. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. The incident will be investigated.

Remember the old joke "How do you separate the men from the boys in the Navy?" "With a crowbar!"

LOL. I haven't heard that one for decades. When I served in the USN homosexuals were banned from the Navy. Well before "Don't ask, don't tell."

If you have seen the hole in the side of the McCain, my guess is that those missing were killed on impact and their bodies are trapped in the compartment that was opened to the sea and still flooded. Wont find them until there is a temporary patch is welded over the hole and the compartment dewatered. Or if the ship is drydocked, then they can dewater compartment. Either way, IMO that is where they will find the missing sailors

At first I read your post as he had driven his sub into a gay bar called San Francisco and he isn’t even in AA yet.

Drowned in watertight compartments that won’t be able to be examined until they bolt plate over the hole and pump the water out.

Both of these episodes reflect badly on the state of training of our navy and the merchant trade. most especially this last one. The port side aft point of impact may indicate that the merchantman was the burdened vessel ( if McCain was sailing a steady course). But as has been noted in these forums many times there is a responsibility on the part of both vessels to take effective action to avoid collision.

In fact the term COlission means both are, in proportion, responsible if there is an unforntunate meeting. If a vessel hits a fixed object, that is an allision.

Military vessels have AIS (They don’t turn it on because it drains the batteries)
