House GOP eyeing $1B disaster funds cut to finance wall

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is promising billions to help Texas rebuild from Harvey-caused epic flooding, but his Republican allies in the House are looking at cutting almost $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president’s border wall.

The pending reduction to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account is part of a massive spending bill that the House is scheduled to consider next week when lawmakers return from their August recess. The $876 million cut, which is included in the 1,305-page measure’s homeland security section, pays for roughly half the cost of Trump’s down payment on the U.S.-Mexico border wall that the president repeatedly promised Mexico would finance.

It seems sure that GOP leaders will move to reverse it next week as floodwaters cover Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city, and tens of thousands of Texans have sought refuge in shelters. There’s only $2.3 billion remaining in federal disaster coffers.

"Boys, Harvey couldn't have come at a better time for us! This little maneuver will surely give us an out to kill the wall funding!" [all laugh]

Trump needs to call these snakes out now in a preemptive strike via an emergency session of Congress to vote on a clean relief package right now !

1300+ pages of lawyer speak, that no body will bother to read\debate, but have no problem(s) passing in the dead of night....as it balloons over 2k pages.

Remember peeps, this is YOUR tax $$$. Stolen by way of the gun, for purposes unauthorized.

So EASY to vote for ‘charity’...when it’s not YOUR $$ on the line.

Those aren’t allies

The lying cowardly bastards need to pass tax reform, help out Harvey victims, and then cut useless spending

McConnell is Senate majority leader. He has nothing to do with the House.

This is Houston’s third “hundred-year” flood in three years. After Katrina there were questions as to why we should pay to rebuild below sea level.

Is it reasonable to ask why we should pay to rebuild on such low land along the Texan Gulf coast?

In fact, as I think about it, why don’t we rebuild along the border? It’s cheaper there, and we can siphon plenty off of that $100B spending to put up a real wall—not just the cheap fence that the border patrol union wants.

These scumbags are trying to force Trump into making a Hobson’s choice.

Add the border wall funding to the increase in disaster aid for Texas, Louisiana, etc. Put the dems in a no win situation.

Is there any precedent for a sitting president to repudiate his party and start a new one on the spot?

Two things you can take to the bank: 1) the proposed cut, written in long before Harvey, will be reinstated and then some. 2) There will be billions of unrelated pork written in as well, juts like with Sandy.

Because, Swamp.

McConnell is Senate majority leader. He has nothing to do with the House.

He works in this house. McConnell's on the left side. the "House" chamber(capital "H") is on the right:

The title of the post said "House" because it was the first word in the sentence, not because it was referring to the House chamber.
