something has changed in our society, when I was a youth; Teenagers had ready access to all sorts of shotguns, rifles, and pistols. it was common to go plinking after school in the woods with a bunch of kids. Moms would shoo the armed boys out of the house ‘go outside and play’

My guess is the change is the psychotropic drugs which are force fed to our boys in great doses. Every single shooter in recent years was on prescription drugs.

The mothers aren’t home anymore, the kids watch vicious video games, down load porn, and generally are growing up like animals. This is one of the results.

While that may very well play a roll, my ex had a pretty good hypothesis.

In this new world of everybody wins, everybody gets a trophy....this generation has NO idea how to handle rejection or failure and they just explode.

On the day of the April 16th shooting at Virginia Tech, there was a kid selling guns in the middle school down the street from VT. The kid did not get off easily. Bad timing.

There was a possible school shooting stopped a few months afterwards at the same school. I only know because my son identified the kid’s locker where the guns were found to school officials.

Some of my classmates were known as Jackson Whites, mixed race related to the Ramapough Indians. Oftentimes they’d be walking along Rte 59 in Hilburn,NY making their way into the woods by the Mahwah River carrying 22 rifles to hunt small game, and nobody gave it a second thought.

Re the video games, you are so right. I am a senior citizen who plays a video game with my 69 year old brother. The game is fun in many ways, but it has dark, even terrible aspects that I, a mature adult, find disturbing. The story forces players to make difficult moral choices, for example. Kids younger than 18 should not play this game and similar ones, in my opinion. But it is a popular title and plenty of children do play it.

And the kids don’t know who daddy is.

We’d leave shot guns in the headache rack and shells rolling around on the floorboard of unlocked pickups in the school parking lot. No one thought a thing about it. If you had a problem, you got into a fist fight but never a gun fight.

Washington state. Isn’t that liberal? Guess all those marijuana fields weren’t so calming as they thought.

Back in 1960, kids often brought handguns, rifles, knives to school. We often sat around sharpening knives after lunch.
We also knew kids who brought rifles, handguns or large knives to school were in the LEATHERCRAFT class making holsters and scabbards.

First handgun brought to school that I remember was in 1956, McCormick School in Farmington NM. It was a single shot military style percussion cap pistol for show and tell.

I live about 20 miles from Rockford. Local news reporter mentioned elementary school gurney report as “not related to shooting.”

All victims are high-school students. No report yet on who the shooter is. Of course, they know but do not want to release name. I can think of a few good reasons not to do that — checking shooters’ friends, social media, home, family, etc etc for possible collaborators and certainly for “motivation.” They’ll release it as soon as they can.

http://www.thepostemail.com/2013/02/01/does-the-sidwell-friends-school-have-armed-guards/

“The Sidwell Friends School has a security department with 11 employees and one current job opening.

My high school’s security consisted of a dyspeptic vice-principal. One day we covered his commode with Saran Wrap.

Sidwell’s guards may not have guns on their hips, but I’m going to take a SWAG that they carry concealed. Our political and economic overlords aren’t going to trust their precious children to a `gun free zone’.

Animals don’t sleep in beds. Pigs don’t sleep in beds—with sheets.

If this was one of those “weird kid on Zoloft” stories, I got good money that he destroyed his hard drive before opening fire. That erases the path back to the people who encouraged him.

I play Call of Duty and Battlefield all the time. I’ve never wanted to shoot anyone.

Until around 1987 I used to give lectures to HS history classes about the Civil War and the weapons used. I would even fire off a round out of a carbine or a pistol so they could smell the acrid gunpowder and imagine that multiplied thousands of times. No way today. In the 7th grade we made gun racks for our rifles in shop. At the end of the semester we displayed them with our rifles hung upon them. We often up until 1970 would have rifles in the gun racks in trucks parked in the parking lots and often we'd bring them in to clean, show and tell. One knife fight between two black women in the library fighting over a boy once sent blood splattering everywhere and was the only incident I saw.

Might indeed be a weird kid on Zoloft. Rockford looks like a wholesome little place , not prosperous, but people look respectable . I do have a friend who has lived there all his life. But come to think of it, he lost two of his three children to drugs and alcohol. They were adults when they died.

Rockford is on the road between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene tribal lands and casino, so that is definitely a well-traveled road. Probably ideal for dealers who might sell to gamblers coming through in the middle of the night flush with cash. I had an Indian friend who intimated as much.
