New Yorkers like to think they are more sophisticated than us common folk. Perhaps they define sophistication as a big expensive ineffective school system. City high-school grads pay at least $63 million a year for remedial classes, thanks to a school system that hands them worthless diplomas, The New York Post claims.

My HS diploma from California isn’t even good toilet paper.
The best thing I ever did was to do high school over again as a home school curriculum.
Best. Thing. EVER.
For 15 years a student had to pass an exit exam, called CAHSEE, in order to get a diploma. Students had six opportunities, beginning as a sophomore through their senior year, to pass; if they failed all attempts, they received a certificate of completion of HS instead. Two years ago, the CA legislature decided to vacate all CAHSEE scores, and retroactively give all students with completion certificates diplomas instead. They have since replaced the test with one called CAASPP, which tests students in grades 3-5, and also 11, but what effect it has on high school graduation with a diploma, I am not sure.
That was a clever move.
New requirements for HS graduation:
(1) Write your name
(2) Count to 10 without using fingers/toes.
New York To Scrap Literacy Test For Teachers In The Name Of Diversity
"Just 41 percent of black teaching candidates and 46 percent of Hispanics passed the test on their first try, compared to 64 percent of white candidates."
Abolish all public sector unions, most especially the government school teachers unions.
I don’t know about (2.). That might get challenged in court...
and 40 years ago, they just failed your ass and sent you on your way in life. Even in Elementary school in the 60’s here in California they FAILED students and held them back a year.
All of this Ended under Jerry Brown and the abortion called Public Employee Unions.
Where is this literacy test? and shouldn’t we freepers get a crack at it? I didn’t see it in the article.
