An Albuquerque, New Mexico, Circle K clerk claims she was suspended for two weeks after using a gun to defend herself during an attempted armed robbery.

The incident occurred Monday night.

The clerk — Jennifer Wertz — told KOAT 7 that she gets nervous walking out to her car alone at night, so she brought her gun to work when she realized she was scheduled for the late shift. She said that she “put her gun in her pocket after she heard that another nearby convenience store was just robbed,” and soon a man allegedly entered the store while holding a gun.

Wertz said, “He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot.” Her shot struck 23-year-old Ferron Mendez “in the torso,” but he is expected to survive the wound.

Was she violating company policy? Did she maybe save her own life? I think I'd chose the latter.

I’ve moonlighted in convenience stores. It’s pretty much across the board policy to not permit guns to be used by the employees. I’m not saying that that’s good policy. I’m just saying that it’s made clear and if she didn’t want to abide by policy she should not have taken the job.

Besides, if she was going to show the gun and lose her job the least she could have done was shot the perp.

If the claim is true that Circle K suspended her after using a gun to save her life, Circle K executives are traitors to the United States of America.

You didn't read far enough. She did shoot the perp.

Circle K doesn’t care about their employees getting robbed. There are many steps they could take like removing posters from glass fronts, prominent signs about video cameras, better lighting, etc. They don’t bother so they don’t care.

These freaking greedy, P.C. corporations will jeopardize their employees rather than allow them their legal and moral right to self defense

Dear policy writer, until you’ve been there, shut up!

While working in a retail establishment, I too had a gun pointed in my face. It was against policy to have a gun in one’s possession at work, so there was nothing to be done except to try and survive. Not a very pleasant moment. If I were to have shot the perp, would have been fired.

🔫. She did shoot the perp. Expected to survive. Doesn't look like he'll get much when he sues her for lost wages. 👹

Firefighters are not allowed to carry guns either. I once had a psycho who called 911 saying he was having a heart attack point a semi-auto hand gun at me at close range and start pulling the trigger. All I could do was quickly exit and my co-workers and I armed ourselves with axes until the police arrived.

The police told me later that the idiot had put the cartridges in the magazine backwards. There are of course more humorous details about the event... his goal was to ambush some first responderes and then shoot himself.

Exactly. Maybe she needed the job badly, but needed her life more. So, she took the job knowing that she would be in trouble if she had to use her gun and was willing to do it. I have no problem with her using it, or a private company like Circle K having any ignorant policy they want. My private policy will be to avoid buying anything at Circle K.

I used to frequent a convenience store in my younger, dumber days after a few pops with my friends at a local bar which was right across the street. This was usually after 2am. I knew the regular night clerk and we would small talk as he rung up my munchies and I would then be on my way. A few months later a guy came into the store demanded money;got the money;proceeded to shoot the clerk in the head instantly killing him. This was not a big city, but Lancaster,Pennsylvania with a different kind of “Amish”. I used to work a 11-7 night shift at a gas station as a kid and that was my nightmare.

I can’t imagine letting my female family members work the late shift at a convenience store.
