Donald Trump urges NFL boycott as Wembley stars #takeaknee during anthem

Donald Trump has renewed his attack on NFL stars kneeling during the national anthem, by urging fans to stop going to games "until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country".

In tweets posted on Sunday morning, the US President told fans if they boycott matches "you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!"

He added: "...NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back US."

Mr Trump's latest criticisms of the protest brought an immediate response at Wembley Stadium, which hosted the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars, as at least a dozen players knelt during the national anthem.

That followed the intervention of the music legend Stevie Wonder, who became the biggest single name to back the growing movement.

As he took the stage for the Global Citizen Festival, aimed at eliminating poverty, the blind soul legend knelt, joining the protest against racial injustice started by NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The 67-year-old told the crowd: "Tonight, I'm taking a knee for America".

On Saturday night, the protest spread to another sport, as Major League Baseball player Bruce Maxwell knelt during the anthem before his team, the Oakland Athletics, played the Texas Rangers, and he later predicted more will follow.

“I’m sure that there are many that need their football fix no matter what, but I’m not one of them.”

Anyone who watches the NFL now, hates America and supports the protesters.

Importantly, actual box office from games is just a fraction of what the TV rights bring in. But TV revenues are very sensitive to low ratings. Some of their contracts even require rebates if the games don’t meet the minimal Nielsen ratings.

So the best bet to get the NFL’s attention is a “front end” boycott. A hard and fast revenue drop in the early part of the season.

Just holding off for the next few weeks will not just do it, but also make President Trump look better, and his arguments more convincing that they need to crack down on this nonsense.

I’m with President Trump.

These players need to respect their country or not play football.

As a protest against the childish antics of these players, a boycott is appropiate. It certainly wouldn’t be a mancott.

suicide in progress. Does the NFL now realize which side of the street they find themselves on? It is the patriotic duty of Americans to not watch the NFL. I guess the money went to their head.

Calling fellow Americans “sons of bitches” is not something a president should do.

They should be called names far worse than SOB. Good for Trump to have enough balls to tell it like it is.

From the dead-tree Wall St. Journal:
[owner of ESPN] Disney needs to remember that the culture of sports is fundamentally celebratory and unifying, not divisive. - Holman W. Jenkins, “Never mind Jemele Hill, ESPN Isn’t Doomed”
But then, it’s an open question whether profit is more important to Hollywierd than “being woke” is.

There was no money in it for thoe slave holders the average Irish chinese, Scott lasted 2 years because there was no skin in the game, The Holy Blacks those sold into slavery by their brothers however were paid good money for

I never saw a man ruin his prized posession

And let me ask you this, if Blacks in UK and Black in America had the same historical experience why are the one her sassy assholes?

i quit watching NFL games except for my home team.

Instead, I switched to college ball, which is more exciting anyway, with lots of offensive yardage, lots of scoring, lots of exciting mistakes, lots of exciting close games, lots of exciting blowouts, lots of legitimate rivalries, lots of everything absent in the “don’t lose at all costs” boring mentality of practically every NFL team. NFL football is so formulaic that it’s like watching a chorus line dance.

“My plan....No more athletic scholarships....ever.”

I agree with this, but the universities will push back very hard because of the revenue college sports generates.

In Europe it isn’t like here. There are club teams for soccer, and youth academies. If you get into one of the elite academies they are responsible for your childhood education, but they are private football/soccer clubs. You work your way up through the system, and either make it onto the first team, get traded or loaned to another team, or move on to another chapter of your life. They are totally unconnected to any formal educational institutions.

To be honest, I think the current system is in some ways bad for minorities. Very, very few ever make it to the professional level, and if they do they don’t last long. This is from an ESPN article in 2016:

“The average NFL career lasts 3.3 years, according to the NFL Players’ Association; 78 percent of players go broke within three years of retirement and 15.7 percent file for bankruptcy within 12 years of leaving the league, according to a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.”

Yet sports careers are seen as a road to success in minority communities. There ought to be much, much more emphasis on getting a good education, acquiring skills, learning how to manage personal finances, and things like entrepreneurship.
