German Chancellor Angela Merkel has emerged with the largest party in Germanys national election but has lost well over a million voters as the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) has come a solid third in the race, beating previous expectations. Ms Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) were always expected to win this years German national election but few predicted that the CDU would have its worst electoral showing since 1949. Merkel herself expressed disappointment at the result but vowed to continue to govern Germany, likely with new coalition partners.
The Social Democrats (SPD) under former European Union parliament president Martin Schulz did even worse, scoring only 20 percent of the vote according to exit polls from German public broadcaster ARD. The result is the worst in the partys history since the Second World War.
CDU/CSU- 32.5% SPD- 20.0% Linke- 9.0% Green- 9.5% FDP- 10.5% AfD- 13.5% Others- 5.0%
Martin Schulz, who many saw as lackluster during his televised debate with Merkel, has vowed to stay on and fight right-wing extremism in the German Bundestag. Schulz also announced that he would not seek to renew the grand coalition between the SPD and the CDU claiming that he did not want to see the populist anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) become the biggest opposition party.
The only party enjoying a decisive improvement in fortunes in the election is the AfD who entered parliament for the first time with a projected 13.5 percent or around 88 seats in the Bundestag.

They using those “computer” ballot boxes over there? I’m betting yes.
I was wondering how she could possible have been reelected after what she’s done to Germany...then I remembered 2012.
She will still call the shots right? Germany can’t survive another period of full-bore Merkel.
It’s not clear to me, but I’m not as familiar with German government as many others. Schultz is acting like he won’t let the SPD form a coalition with CDU.
Sounds like it’s going to be a weird coalition with the Greens and the Free Democrats, which should be interesting to watch.
Linke means “Left” in German. So the hard Left only got 9%, and the “moderate Left” CDU of Merkel did worse than expected.
Political change in modern Germany seems to move at a glacial pace.
Viel Danke. My German coursework was over 30 years ago.
Socialists got 22%, Green got 10%, Left got 9%.
On the other hand, Christian Dems got 35%, Alliance for Deutchland got 13, “Liberals” (allegedly in the classical sense) got 11%.
Merkey has already been doing huge shifts on policies to stem the growth of AfD.
Interesting that Labor/Socialists won’t form unity government with CDU. That means CDU kinda has to form government with AfD or Greens and Liberals.
No. Pen and paper.
Uh-oh! 88 is code for HH (eights letter of the alphabet) which stands for Heil Hitler, so they must be Nazis...cue the conspiracy nutters.
Ballot stuffing the old fashioned way.
Piano keyboards need either to add or subtract one key, so that piano players won’t be perceived as neo-Nazis. 88 has subliminal meaning.
And the tone of the key of A needs to be changed from the current Nazi-assigned 440 Hz!
There have been instances of “miscounting”. Not on a large scale, but where there is a human element, there is room for manipulation...
Ban pianos!
Anyway, there will be no “88” hysteria: Final numbers show 94 seats for the AfD...
And what does "Hz" stand for anyway? Hitlerzahl?
