Soldier gets rare double arm transplant (Explain to him what getting on your knees is like)

BALTIMORE -- Perched on a therapy table at Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of the few quadruple amputees from the Iraq War reached up over his head with both hands and launched a pink ball to the Marine Corps commandant.

Five months ago, Army Sgt. Brendan Marrocco’s arms belonged to someone else.

Marrocco, who was blown up in 2009, is the first soldier to receive a double arm transplant -- and just the seventh successful recipient in the United States.

Marrocco didn’t have any physical sensation of the plastic ball in his hands, but he managed a pretty good zip as he played catch with Gen. James Amos on Wednesday.

“Mentally, they’re all mine,” Marrocco said about his new limbs. “Physically, I can’t feel them.”

This soldier is gone from Baltimore now but maybe the Ravens and visiting teams can go to the local VA hospital on visits and explain to these military members and veterans what its like to be able to get on your knees for any reason. Maybe they can take the time to explain why the flag and national anthem are their chosen vehicle for protest? Maybe they can also explain why the Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars stood for the British anthem and knelt for our own in London last Sunday? The Ravens likely would have rather seen the Union Jack by the dawn's early light that morning in Baltimore. The disrespect on foreign shores is the last straw for me, utterly disgusting.

What courage and will to live & what a sacrifice! These ball players will find no forgiveness or second chance with this fan.

The flag, this soldier, patriots, all stand in the way of what the liberals really want. To tear down the nation and replace it with their socialist utopia hellhole, complete with racial and “grievance” caste systems, with a few of the enlightened ones (them) on top.

There is nothing that will stand in their way. They will slander this wounded vet; “he lost his arms fighting for big oil, corporations, the patriarchy”...whatever. They can’t be shamed for doing this because they have no shame.

The surgery isn’t covered by the military insurance Tricare

Why the heck not?

A guess is that it is considered “experimental.” That means in order to get the operation, it has to conform to certain criteria.

I would imagine this person is not going to have to spend a dime.

As an aside, there are some incredible advances being made in face and hand transplants—funded by the US Gov.

Remember, every story has a bias—but they don’t always share all of the facts.

Echoing an earlier response. WHY NOT ? Since when are combat wounds considered as falling under an insurance ? The Military has its own hospitals, surgeons etc.

It’s going to take determination and fortitude to make it through nerve regeneration. The first sensation to register is searing pain. It can take months to pass. My dad was having some success with regaining sensation lost in his feet due to neuropathy due to laser light treatments. He halted them though, it was too painful.

How any American can take a knee after reading this is beyond my comprehension.

"The surgery isn’t covered by the military insurance Tricare, so Hopkins and the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine footed the bill for Marrocco’s surgery. The doctors donated their time."
