And the Red Cross has asked the ARRL to find at least 50 ham radio licensees to volunteer for all-expense-paid three-week tours of duty in Puerto Rico. When the satellite dishes have been destroyed, along with cell sites, good old-fashioned HF radio to the rescue!

It’s really something how next to none of the news reports mentioned that the gov of Puerto Rico had to ask first. This article explains it. He asked Wednesday, and Thursday AM, first thing, the request was granted.

That map helps one appreciate the problem. There's only one container port, near San Juan. There are a lot of other ports, and who knows how usable they are? And it looks like a lot of the island has no easy access, even before the hurricane devastated infrastructure.

My guess would be that the US may have to stop fighting wars that further global interests. Bring those troops home and rebuild Puerto Rico, so it finally has adequate infrastructure. Imagine if all the "nation building" done in Afghanistan and all the resources used to destroy Syria had been instead used to upgrade Puerto Rico's infrastructure.

Weird how many assclowns are complaining about DJT not doing anything for PR yet the Gov is praising the president and the administration for being so pro-active. Somebody is making somebody else look foolish and we already know which story the lame ass msm is putting out. “Trump doesn’t care about some distant island in the middle of a YUGE ocean.”

Since their docks are apparently nonfunctional, how does this help them?

Because it gets McCain and "Trump hates Latinos" off the air for a few hours. Otherwise it accomplishes nothing. This is how our "free press" screws the nation with its lies.

What I don’t see is any real honest journalism with the facts regarding the recovery in PR. Mostly I hear what a disaster the whole issue is. Well, lets have some facts. Tell the whole story, on why the infrastructure is so screwed up, how it got that way, and why seemingly the public is not up to the task of helping themselves. Frankly I don’t believe that for a minute unless proven beyond reasonable doubt. Where’s the story?

Why is this abomination still on the books to begin with?

They’re stealing supply trucks. Since the roads are ruined, where they’re going is another story.

why seemingly the public is not up to the task of helping themselves.

Spend some time in Puerto Rico. Look at all the razor wire and bars on the windows, even in the good neighborhoods. See the beautiful shoreline used as a junk yard where hundreds of cars have been just pushed over the cliff.

Then ask yourself why Puerto Ricans in that beautiful climate can't grow their own produce to support their people, or why people who live in a hurricane zone haven't made emergency preparations, e.g., stored fuel, generators, water, food.

Billions of US dollars have been poured into Puerto Rico but few of those dollars have gone into building the infrastructure. They're like some teenagers. They just expect mom and dad (Uncle Sam) to keep taking care of them. And then, like some teenagers, they demand that they be liberated - with their allowance, of course.

FUBAR.

This is what happens when a culture of dependency is allowed to fester over generations. Yes, there are many Puerto Ricans who do not fit that narrow definition, however their numbers are in the minority. The vast majority of island residents have no concept of self-sufficiency, and the municipal workers reflect the same ideological mindse

Domestic Puerto Rican truck drivers sit at home waiting for FEMA or the U.S. Army to arrive with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meanwhile the cargo of foodstuffs and supplies they should be transporting sits in various Puerto Rican ports waiting for them to show up and do their job.

No amount of aid is going to help Puerto Rico until the people who live there agree to lift a finger and begin to help themselves.

I guess for now I’m stuck with Mr Long’s rather (fill in the blank) assessment.

Is PR too big to fail?

Besides feeling a bit helpless in regards the situation, I’m thinking the Fed should have provided PR as a part of all fifty States National Guard Mission. In that way the infrastructure issues could be addressed, and considering the seriousness of the lawlessness also take care of policing the island. That makes much more sense to me than Afghanistan and far safer, maybe. How to clean house when the house have been ravaged by rats and then the storm hits?

3,000 shipping containers stuck at the San Juan dock. Amazing number.

Coast guard reported both PR and VI docks open a few days ago. They did an amazing job. Some with restrictions, but functional.

Problem is that the materials can’t get off the docks as they haven’t been able to restore power and clear streets to other area from the docks yet.
