the jones act is important. With it, the U.S can board any and all U.S flagged ships and inspect without causing an international brouhaha.
It also has a certain element of protection from infiltration and invasion.
All in all, I support the jones act.
This is beyond stupid. The nevertrumpers never stop. PR has plenty of supplies. There are ships stacked up to deliver even more. The problem is, they can’t get the supplies out of the port. Roads are blocked and there are no drivers even if the roads were clear.
“What about the idiotic rule that a foreign ship cannot unload at Seattle, then unload at Portland, then unload at LA? Instead the ship has to choose one?”
Since when?
I’ve been retired awhile, but when I worked for ZIM we went to multiple ports in the U.S., and the Japanese ships I used to work went to multiple ports as well. Quite curious what you are reporting here.
Jones Act denies foreign vessels picking up cargo in the U.S., and delivering that cargo in a different U.S. port. Has to be U.S. built, and flagged vessels only, and I do support that seeing as how the government has so trashed our Merchant Marine over the years the least we can do is favor what’s left with some business.
Um, no middle ground here?
McCain should worry about the ports in Arizona....
He just wants ‘his name’ on anything ‘that will pass’ before he does....a few more notches in his belt on the way out the door. Trump was way ahead of them both on this...they’re just catching up.
And I have to ask, what possible interest of the people of land-locked Arizona, whom he was sent to Washington to represent, could be involved in the "Jones Act"?
I could see why International Globalist Corporations would like to repeal it, but wouldn't Arizonians be more concerned about illegal aliens or something?
This has been the law since at least the "Navigation act of 1817." It was created to protect commercial US shipping interests from foreign competition.
Believe it or not, this was a big contributing cause of the Civil War. The Confederates wanted Free Trade, and the Northeastern shippers stood to lose a fortune if this happened.
Well said.
“We talked about it and he said that he found out early on that it is better to let the women lead and show the man what she liked and wanted. “
You have to understand that McCain doesn’t have the slightest regard for Arizona and it’s people. He fancies himself a larger figure than that. As misguided as Murkowski and Collins are, I think that in their weak minds, they do think they are representing their constituents parochial interests. And they are “bringing home the bacon” for them, even though in the larger context it’s disgraceful because they are looking for more than their fair share.
The Union did not want the south to get rich by selling their cotton directly to England and Europe.
In other news: John McCain Introduces bill to exempt all members of Congress from all Federal laws forever.
If Arizona voters were concerned about illegal aliens they would not keep electing Sen. McAmnesty and Sen. Flakeamnesty.
In a nutshell.
There's more to it than that, it also had to do with the economic and political power shift that would have occurred if the South started supply the Western state region with goods brought up through the Mississippi. It would have swung many more states into it's coalition, and it would have sapped money and power from the Washington-New York corridor.
An independent South was a serious economic threat to the established power brokers in the North East.
Every time McCain opens his mouth to spew some BS it makes me hate him even more!
He could have said it was great that Trump waived the Jones Act to help PR, but that would have been supportive of Trump.
Instead, he coerces that wishy-washy Lee to back him in a move that would indicate Trump isn’t doing enough to help PR.
A couple of years ago, I thought Lee was a Conservative-leaning Mormon, but in recent months he’s proved me wrong.
President Trump waived the ACT for 10 days so there could be a much larger opportunity for Puerto Rico to get the immediate goods and supplies to get back on their feet.

While that’s good to get more food, water, etc., to PR, as C-130s from USAFR have been doing, the supplies are just sitting because there is no means of transporting them to the areas that are in need. The roadways are blocked with debris and nothing is being done to clear it to permit delivery of the needed supplies. .....Why not use the V-22 aircraft?
I repeat... Why not use the V-22 aircraft? It can haul loads, fly from the US East Coast, refuel in flight, fly from ships, land in remote areas to deliver supplies and take to the air again.
The Union did not want the south to get rich by selling their cotton directly to England and Europe.

Exactly. ...The North was primarily into mfg., but the goods they made were the same as made across the pond, so no market for export.
The South had developed the tobacco and cotton agri business and had negotiated valuable contracts with England and Europe.
Abe and the North couldn’t stand that, so they started the CW to eliminate the source of the South’s success; slavery.
Abe’s emancipation just eliminated slavery in the Confederate States; not in the North, as there were still many slaves there and frequently the owners were also black.
The CW was not about opposition to slavery; it was about eliminating the means of economic production in the South.
It was about economics and States’ rights.
The Osprey could be used for inter island use to transfer goods to the interior, but their 20,000 lb (9,070 kg) of internal cargo, or up to 15,000 lb (6,800 kg) of external cargo (dual hook), pales when you consider the average cargo ship can float gross tonnage of 153,222 tons, which is not much because containers max out for cubic space before they reach max weight. There are large ships that displace on the order of 600,000 tons. But with the problems of the leaving of waste by the storm it may be too big for some ports. But it could be a shorter time frame to get the same amount of material in place using ships.
Trump’s intent is to get them on their feet, but there has been no info on power, accessibility, or manpower. So we aren’t totally sure what can be done and what is being done. Film at 11 I guess.
