I think the Basques still do not have independence. Countries are sovereign and people don’t just get to break off a piece and start their own country.

Depends on WHY catalonia wants independence.

This video has a good rundown on WHY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRU-CL9HNW8

Seems like it has it’s roots way way back in the early 1900s....

But it seems like Catalonia is sick of being the tax livestock of the rest of Spain and the refugees crisis created by Merkel and the EU isn;t helping matters much either.

Spain is sovereign.

Two problems really stick out:
There was no referendum of the whole country.
“On 9 November 2015, Catalan lawmakers approved a plan for secession from Spain by 2017 with a majority vote 72 to 63. “ (Wiki)
That should have passed by a super-majority.

If I recall correctly, the people of England weren’t asked for their approval in 1776 either....

And there was a long, difficult war.

It’s possible that a nation-wide vote would have the authority to clear the way for a peaceful separation.

And what happened as a result? You want to see another war? Fortunately they aren't prepared for that even if it was what they wanted. Spaniards were disarmed decades ago.

It would be interesting to see what happened if the region simply refused to forward tax revenues to Madrid.

The government of Spain rejected that.

There is no need for a war.

>>>> It would be interesting to see what happened if the region simply refused to forward tax revenues to Madrid.

That would be enough for independence.

Spain's never fully integrated. Different regions have their dialects as second languages. Isn't it a bit odd that the puppetmasters were all for breaking up Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia when it was to their benefit?

That could be a very meaningful threat, especially if we had a similar situation in the USA. Our federal law enforcement agencies are tiny in comparison to the population. For example, it would seem difficult to foreclose on a home for unpaid taxes if the state and local agencies like clerks' offices (where the titles are kept) refused to cooperate.

Can’t find anything about that.
Do you have a source? Or even a year?

Of course the sovereign wouldn’t have to accede. Though that would be problematic.

Not quite the same: Catalonia has representation in Spain's parliament and legal ways to address their grievances.

This more like California voting to secede because it doesn't like the outcome of the last Presidential election.

One also has the question the Stalinesque claim that 90% of the votes were for independence-- how could anyone call the election free and fair?

No ... they usually have to fight a war to make it stick.
