Nah; they were to busy killing each other.
Remember the translated names of most tribes was something akin to “We are the only true people”.
Anybody else was considered sub-human, and considered an enemy or a potential slave.

There are no peoples native to the Americas.
Everybody’s ancestors came from somewhere else.
Squatter’s rights didn’t work in Europe - why special consideration for the Americas?

One of my wife's daughters married an Indian. He moved off the reservation and got a job operating heavy equipment (bulldozers, etc.) They moved from California to Detroit. He now works as a truck driver. His tribe operates a casino on the reservation in CA. Their children get benefits from the tribe, out of casino income. Their oldest, a girl, is now in college. Their other children are planning either college or the military. I'm glad to see that they got out of the tribal culture (we hear real horror stories about his relatives back on the reservation). He's a good husband and father, and the children seem to be turning out well. They're all home schooled.

There is too much human history that has been lost forever. Sometimes that frustrates and intrigues me. It would be better if we knew more. Maybe we'd learn to put bad habits behind us.
I've often wondered why the Native Americans had not yet discovered iron. Perhaps they lived more peacefully at large, minimizing the search for better weapons.
The sewage issue is an important one. Why did the Romans make decent sewer systems and those in the Americas did not? Too many questions.

>> But who convinced the tribes that gambling would be a good business venture over the long run?
Someone who stood to profit from it. Construction companies, slot machine companies, food vendors, etc., etc.
