A legislative response to mass killings is elusive on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers cannot settle on a solution. However, there are lots of alternatives when it comes to potentially curbing gun violence.
Background checks. Banning so-called “bump stocks.” Regulating bump stocks. Increasing open-carry provisions. Or just leaving things the way they are.
But would any fix the problem?
Taking action on any plan entails compromise. So far, the sides just aren’t willing to do that. And in a paradoxical twist, the butchery in Las Vegas last week may give Republicans the chance to pass controversial firearm legislation of their own, which Democrats vehemently oppose.
Let’s start with Rep. Carlos Curbelo, the Florida Republican who is rolling out a ban to bar bump stocks.
“After so many years of trying to reach a bipartisan compromise on gun legislation, it looks like we may have a breakthrough here,” Curbelo said recently on the Fox Business Channel.

If the Senate Republicans had a spine and didn’t agree with 80% of the liberals’ agenda, they would eliminate the filibuster rule and do what is right for America.
Trade nothing.
They want all guns.
They have said it.

You can bump fire a semi-auto rifle from the shoulder with the help of a rubber band. Semi-auto rifles can be bump fired even without using any add-on aid. Even semi-auto pistols can be bump fired.
The gun grabbers won’t be satisfied with banning bump-fire stocks. I expect they’ll be pushing hard for severe magazine capacity restrictions. They might even try to ban semi-automatic firearms altogether though that would probably be almost impossible for them to achieve.
He’s also holding it about a inch or so from his shoulder. That’s gonna leave a mark.
My AK Slide Fire lets you hold the stock securely against your shoulder. Anyone saying it’s not accurate (or as accurate as an AK can be) doesn’t know what s/he’s talking about. And you can buy a nice OEM pussy pad for the SF stock.

The dilemma they face: we want silencers and reciprocity—not more things banned by the gun-grabbing nannies.

Well, you all know what, I was always on the fence and suspicious of ending fillibuster rule, not anymore! I am against it.
Trump is making a serious mistake asking to change the rule for a temporary legacy which could saddle us years later with government deicts after government edicts.
Yep, a simple velocity trigger and a loose grip will get you going bump firing.
Banning bump stocks will have no practical effect. The phenomenon can be duplicated with a thumb and a belt loop.
Power is their problem in need of a solution which they are always seeking.

The Democrats have shown that they will eliminate the rule if it suits them and keep or impose it if suits them. It is some sort of firewall only if it is enshrined in the Constitution itself. As a mere Congressional rule of procedure it only restrains conservatives.
I predict that bump stocks are going to be outlawed and ammunition will be heavily taxed.
If the second happens, Trump does not get a second term. He might not even live through the first, the Left will be so emboldened.
All of the legal gun dealers possess Federal Firearm Licenses. Part of their responsibility is to maintain a hard copy of all firearm transactions in their stores, i.e., BATFE Form 4473. These records are supposed to remain on the premises of the business. The BATFE has the authority to in come any time and inspect those records. Should the business close, BATFE takes possession of these records. The question that begs to be asked are these old records gathering dust in some federal warehouse or are they being secretly compiled into a firearm registry?
I, too, marvel at how LEOs were able to match the serial numbers from the recovered firearms with the Form 4473s or the NICBCS inquiries.
It is my understanding that the FBI's NICBCS is supposed to purge all digital records of background checks after a certain time (way less than a year). Sure would like to see someone on FR confirm this. We have been paranoid for some time (since 1998 when the NICBCS went fully operational) that the FBI makes backup copies of these background checks with the eventual illegal goal of developing a national firearm registry.
I believe I heard some talking newshead say that the mass murderer had purchased 30 of his firearms this year. That suggests to me that the FBI still had the NICBCS records and had not purged them.
Of course, my preference would be to just repeal the 1934, 1968 and 1986 gun laws, AND add in national reciprocity on top of it.
The GOPe is going to give them whatever they want. It’s up to President Trump to do what’s right.
Surely he knows he could lose his base support if he’s on the wrong side of this one.
My shock expressed in that post was a bit tongue-in-cheek. I’m aware of the issues addressed in your response, although a refresher for me or intro for others is always welcome.
