Backers of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins say they wish they could clone the moderate Republican powerbroker from Maine who has been a crucial swing vote in Congress as Republicans struggle to deliver on President Donald Trump's legislative agenda.
Collins says she will decide during the Senate's weeklong Columbus Day recess whether to stay in the Senate, where she has served for four terms, or again run for governor in Maine.
The Associated Press interviewed 10 of Collins' current and former colleagues and staffers, along with Maine political observers. They said the senator is carefully weighing whether she can have more impact in the Senate or as a governor replacing the term-limited, Trump-allied Republican Gov. Paul LePage.
"I feel like that losing her in the Senate is losing the only existing bridge between the Democrats and Republicans that is there," said Michael Bopp, who has worked as legislative director and counsel to Collins.

I didn’t vote for her as senator and will not vote for her as governor. Heck, can you imagine her in an executive role? Aaargh.
She looks sick with all that twitching. MS?
Exactly!!!.....She has hurt the Conservative movement forever on critical votes....I respect an opponent...MUCH more then a traitor...Ill vote D if she runs...she can retire with Snowe..the true Mother of ObamaCare
“,,,,,youre kidding ,,, right ?”
Maine cant be that that stupid can it? Of course you have all the massholes and new jerkers who have moved there. And the the wonderful Somalis.
“She can go back milking cows!”
Shes too stupid.., she would try and milk the bulls.
Well, as a non-Pine Tree Stater, I’d opt for Collins to run for goobenor and hope that LePage would run for the Senate. Maine would be stuck with Collins either way (assuming she wins), but the rest of us would have less exposure to her if she were the goobenor. I’d take LePage any day as her replacement in the Senate.
In my opinion Collins is as pathetic as the arrogant, insufferably pompous Angus King.
“Trump carried CD-2 by almost 10 points, most of us deplorables in that district are loyal Trump supporters, something that Susie does not get or understand.”
I salute you.
“She looks sick with all that twitching. MS?”
And the shaky Katherine Hepburn Parkinsons voice. What a piece of business this specimen is.

Collins isn’t totally stupid.
She knows her time of influence is over with McCain, Flake and Linda fading into the sunset.
I thank you sir.
After the past few weeks, I cannot imagine her in any role.
But you are right, in an executive role, aaargh as you so eloquently put it.
Is this anything like the polls showing a landslide for Hillary or the interviews with her most ardent supporters as the majority?
The less time they're in session the less damage they can do.
“...who has been a crucial swing vote in Congress...”
Loosely translated: votes with the democrats
As if Maine doesn’t have ot bad enough already.
Better for the other 56 states if she leaves senate...
How about retire to a lobster boat, you can be an anchor.
I live in Maine, and a democrat picking up that seat is NOT a given, because Maine has been getting more conservative in recent years.
Maine splits it’s electoral votes, and Donald Trump and his family made many trips to Congressional District 2, which covers 80% of the state.
Universal super-duper background checks was on the ballot last November and, in spite of boatloads of money spent by Bloomturd, it was turned down by the Maine voters.
We also have Open Carry and Constitutional Carry.
P.S.: I can’t stand Collins and wrote in some else’s name when she ran in 2014.
