I know there is a strong contingent here, who take the “libertarian” view of marijuana and other drugs. And that view is based on responsible personal use of the drug. Such a view does not take into account abuse of the drug, or abuse of drugs in general. That view seems to be that not only marijuana but all drugs should be legal. That view is that we don’t care that marijuana seems to have bad effects especially on young people, whose minds and bodies are still developing and maturing.

Or to look at another way, that view is that we aren’t supposed to talk about whether marijuana or other drugs have any dangers, just supposed to say that libertarian or state’s rights arguments are the arguments which should prevail.

I’m not sure where I stand, I’m just noting some arguments made. I don’t want people thrown in prison if their only crime is possession of a drug. But also not sure about full blown legalization.

This is the thought process that leads to totalitarianism.
Of course there are dangers. I don't want the government protecting me from everything that's dangerous.

Look at Prohibition. It was a total and utter failure. It spawned a smuggling trade, gang violence, and corrupt government officials. Alcohol was illegal and widely available.

It’s the same with marijuana. Half the people in prison are there for non-violent drug offenses. It costs about $30,000 a year to keep them in prison. It costs less than half as much for drug treatment.

Not only that, asset forfeiture would go away as well as hundreds of intrusive laws meant to be used to catch drug dealers.

I don’t know if it’s a “libertarian” view, but I just don’t see it as the government’s place to constantly protect people from their own stupidity.

That said, the government is going to do whatever it pleases. I think that once Colorado showed how profitable legalization could be, a whole lot of qualms went by the wayside.

It doesn't matter if it easily kills you or not, states' rights arguments should easily be the trump card. If people like you want to ban it, then talk to/run for your state legislature, or go pass a Constitutional amendment if you want to do it nationally. There is no "it' s dangerous, the FedGov should ban it" when the FedGov in no way has the power to do so. The Constitution doesn't say the FedGov can do what it wants, it actually explicitly says the opposite!
