'A communist paradise': CPI(M) in Kerala comes in for lavish praise in Washington Post article

The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala has come in for praise in an article in 'The Washington Post', one of the prominent American newspapers, for the "achievements" of the state under its rule.

"A small state in India offers a place for a communist to dream," said the front page article titled "A communist success" in the newspaper's October 29 edition.

It spoke of the communist party's journey in the southern state and devoted an entire central page to contributions of the Left party in Kerala.

"In a small Indian state, the party of Marx may have done too well for its own good," it said.

"Instead of ossifying into an autocratic force, Kerala's communists embraced electoral politics and since 1957 have been routinely voted into power," the article said.

It also points out that unlike in other parts of the world, the communist movement in the state never sought to "stamp out religion".

It traces various stages of the growth and development of the Left movement in the state and also carries pictures and excerpts of an interview of state Finance Minister and economist T M Thomas Issac.

"A century after Bolsheviks swarmed the Winter Palace in Petrograd, Russia (now St Petersburg), the Indian state of Kerala, home to 35 million people, remains one of the few places on earth where communists can still dream," the Washington Post noted.

It also said unlike communists in China, Latin America or Eastern Europe, party leaders in the southern state never seized factories or banned private property.

"Instead, they competed in elections with the centre-left Indian National Congress party, winning some years and losing others," it added.

The newspaper also praised Kerala's workforce calling it "healthy and educated".

So they allow religion and private property. Since I tutor a number of children of Indian immigrants, I know that India has a very strong family tradition. Karl Marx wanted to abolish family, religion, and private property. What does this Communist party stand for? Are they more like social democrats?

Normally the media at least tries to disguise its communist sympathies.

“Kerala’s economy is largely base on remittances from workers living in Arab states, whose remittances total 20% of the region’s GDP.”

“From the 1990s, liberalisation of the mixed economy allowed onerous Licence Raj restrictions against capitalism and foreign direct investment to be lightened, leading to economic expansion and an increase in employment... The state recorded 8.93% growth in enterprises from 1998 to 2005, higher than the national rate of 4.80%.”

IOW, it thrives on foreign investment, foreign remittances, and economic liberalization.

This is of grave concern to me. On October 12, 2017, there was an alleged Marian Apparition in Kerela.

So they haven't tried to suppress religion, they haven't tried to wage war on private industry, they haven't tried to stop free elections and they also are not a nation but a state within a nation - their control of their economy is quite limited.

This isn't Communism at all - it's some guys wearing Marxist t-shirts for fashion.

In short, the comrades at the Washington Compost are amazed to find a single example of communism which has not destroyed family, traditions, religions and the economy, yet.
And this is why communism is wonderfull, Leftards logic!

If that’s communism then I’m a Martian.

Is Kerala fertile ground for terror groups like Islamic State?

Muslim organisations in Kerala have had a penchant for such hair-splitting and argumentative clashes, but it is only recently that there is discussions about IS and al-Qaeda type wiping out non-believers

That is a fact. Getting rid of Christianity is a prerequisite for Marxism.

And the abolition of private property and means of production is the most important tenet of Marxism.

I think our democrats are more communist than these guys.

This Indian state of Kerala “has the largest population of Christians in India...Ancient Christian tradition says that Christianity reached the shores of Kerala in AD 52 with the arrival of Thomas the Apostle, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ (from Wikipedia).” Christians are about 18% of the population, Muslims are 27%, and Hindus are 55%.

“State Finance Minister and economist T M Thomas Issac” has a traditionally Christian name, which I have been told is common practice among Indian Christians.

So they’re not really communists then.

This whole article is just imbecilic. It also points out that unlike in other parts of the world, the communist movement in the state never sought to "stamp out religion"

It also said unlike communists in China, Latin America or Eastern Europe, party leaders in the southern state never seized factories or banned private property.

Yeah, right! Like they had a choice. Kerala like any other state has to follow the Indian Constitution and anyone trying anything as stupid as what the writer suggests would find themselves booted out of office pretty quickly by the courts and/or by the central government.
