Churches Vow to Arm Themselves in Wake of Shooting
PJ Media ^ | 11/05/17

Churches around the country are rattled after the horrendous attack today in Texas — understandably so. I went to our church's evening service tonight — a Baptist church in a small town, not unlike Sutherland. We arrived late due to inclement weather in the area and found the doors locked from the inside. One of the deacons, acting out of an abundance of caution, had locked the doors and was "on patrol" in the lobby. There were conversations afterward about how churches can/should prepare for an active shooter situation. I know several men (and probably a few women) in our congregation carry when they're in church, but today's attack was a complete ambush. Most, if not all of the congregants would have been focused on the sermon or the music at the front of the sanctuary. An attacker could get off hundreds of rounds before anyone realized what was going on. There's no way a church can fully prepare for such a situation, and most wouldn't want to employ armed guards or force attendees to go through metal detectors.

That said, many churches are actively taking steps to protect church members:

After the shooting years ago in a DFW suburb,I am surprised that all churches haven’t taken this stance.

Just designate one of the parishioners to guard the entrance with a modern sporting rifle and a 30 round mag. That person /persons can rotate each Sunday. Like a duty roster if you will. I’m sure there would be an ample number of volunteers each Sunday.

Mine has been armed for years. Anyone who has a CCW is encouraged to carry in church.

And full SWAT gear with a Cross patch on the shoulder.

Likewise at my church. We have at least four armed security personnel per service.

We have deputies and off duty cops who direct traffic, but between services they sit around by the tacos and donuts and talk to each other. Not a criticism, we don’t hire them for security but for traffic control, but I do wish the security evaluation team would finish evaluating and get a few more like me who carry.

!. Shooter was an atheist and several sources say he hated Christians. 2. He was illegally possessing a firearm. 3. A good guy with a gun stopped him.

Most of the churches I go to, Fundamental Independent Baptist, always have a couple of armed people in the congregation. Not that any of us would know who those people are. (s)

Our church in Northern Virginia does exactly the same thing. I am sure that just the presence of the off duty cops and deputies is more than enough deterrent for cowards like that son-of-the-devil in Texas.

Just like the Los Angeles shooter several years ago, security cameras showed the shooter passing up armed schools for the one that had the “No weapons allowed” sign.

Our church is the same. Ankle holster for me.

Plus we have a local sheriff’s deputy, cameras, etc EVERY service. (north Georgia)

By the way, my condolences to you and your family. GREAT poem about the Breakfast Table.

/sniff ...

Save me a seat at the breakfast table
Save me a dance around the Milky Way
And save me a thousand years
to whisper in your ears
All I’ve wanted to say
Save me a smile and an angel’s feather
Save me a walk down the streets of gold
And baby, we’ll change our minds
just like old times
And maybe we’ll just fly away
Or maybe we’ll stay

We have uniformed police officers at our campus, and probably many more inside the sanctuary carrying. I don't know if its a gun free zone ou not (I doubt it, being Arizona) but my philosophy is "what they don't see won't keep them up at night."

I thought seriously about getting my CCW when I was an usher. I did feel it my duty to tackle an intruder and at least brain him with a candle snuffer. Now I consider it a duty to carry.

I carry in church.

I don’t tell anybody, either.

Easier to ask forgiveness than obtain permission—don’cha know.

Going back in years; how many killings have there been at churches where someone with a gun would have prevented a mass killing?

Yes yes yes! everybody needs to exercise their natural right to carry arms for self protection. The dems will hate this but it is a rational and natural response to keep from getting murdered, mugged or beaten by crazed thugs

There’s been a bunch of attempted mass shootings at churches that generally resulted in the gunman being shot by a member of the church pretty quickly. Roof was the first shooter to succeed with an attack of that nature in decades and he sent off the current trend.
