Reform of the Renewable Fuels Standard(NOT!)

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Deb Fisher (R-Neb) met October 17 to discuss the future of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), which regulates the production of biofuels. At issue was whether the RFS might be lowered for 2018, as Administrator Pruitt suggested in recent months might be the case. But, on October 20, EPA officials announced the renewable fuel volumes for 2018 would be at or above what had been originally proposed, reversing the implication of statements made earlier in the year by Administrator Pruitt.

Such a decision matters because U.S. grain and oilseed prices are highly dependent. For example, 48 percent of the 2017 corn crop is anticipated for use in producing ethanol.

Well that's a let down. Looks like the corn and ethanol lobby folks did their jobs. Ruining engines a gallon at a time. And 48% of the corn crop? That's a couple bushels at least. Corn subsidies, solar subsidies, wind subsidies, electric car subsidies........ Where's my damn subsidy? LOL!

Ruining engines is a preposterous claim. The engine lives of cars and trucks is some 2-3 times greater now. Just the other day, a young woman I know had just had her dad’s truck, a gasoline engine, turning over 400k miles. Point two- the ethanol subsidy ended in 2012. Capturing sun energy by plants is far and away the most efficient—400 gallons of ethanol per plus high protein feed, plus many other corn based products. You don’t have to use it. There is gas without ethanol.

“There is gas without ethanol.” Ergo my “need” for a subsidy. ;-)

aint gonna happen red. Some people want to get oil out of our lives. Ethanol is a piece of the energy pie and is actually quite efficient.

So, send your checks out of country. Are you suggesting farmers have no rights to market their products? Do you have any idea of the surplus corn carryover from last year? No, because you know nothing about agribusiness.

Yeah, imagine that, President Trump supports the nation’s number one industry, agribusiness.

>>There is gas without ethanol.

Not true in many geographies, it is required by the EPA formulation rules. It doesn’t exist in metro ATL.

When corn in the tank came around, farmers dropped those “healthy” vegie crops and planted it all in corn.

It’s in Missouri, right in the middle of corn country. No one is forcing you to use it.

Trump Told Iowa He’d Save Ethanol. His EPA Chief Has Other Ideas

As he sought votes during last year’s Iowa caucuses, candidate Donald Trump courted farmers with praise for ethanol and promises that he would boost the home-grown fuel.

Now those farmers and other biofuel supporters say the people President Trump has put in charge of the issue in Washington are instead boosting their fossil-fuel rivals.

“This seems like a bait-and-switch,” Iowa’s senior Republican senator, Chuck Grassley, said on the Senate floor this week. “Big Oil and oil refineries are prevailing, despite assurances to the contrary.”

There’s maybe 3 stations more than 75 miles from me in CA with E free gas.

A requirement to utilize something is the same as a subsidy for the producers, it creates artificial demand.

You get crappier gas mileage (10-15% lower) due to the lower unit energy.

It sequesters water when allowed to sit for long periods.

My pre 1960’s Briggs and Strattons and my 1928 Maytag don’t like it.

The extra “load” it puts on our national topsoil resources is an issue. There’s less incentive to rotate to soil resting crops or allow large fallow areas to regenerate.

That said, it is a premium octane enhancer plus if you have a vehicle with the capability to burn E85 you have the potential to have several thousand gallons of fuel in a SHTF scenario if you store several hundred gallons of pure gas and can make alcohol...
