To Be Or Not to Be Latinx? For Some Hispanics, That Is the Question.
NBC News Latino ^ | November 7, 2017 | by Raul A. Reyes

It is a word that has been both embraced and scorned by Latinos. It often sparks conversations about identity, gender and privilege. Its usage has led to innumerable social media spats, and the debate shows no sign of dying down. The word in question is “Latinx,” which some Hispanics are using as a more inclusive term for Latinos.

Pronounced “La-teen-ex,” Latinx is a gender-neutral term for people of Latin American heritage. By dropping the traditional –o or –a ending at the end of the root word ‘Latin,’ Latinx encompasses those who identify outside of the gender binary, such as transgender people or those who are gender-fluid. Lately the term has been popping up in mainstream outlets like The New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today, and it is increasingly visible in Hispanic media as well.

But do Latinos need a new word to describe themselves? Hispanics are already a community with myriad identities – such as Nuyorican, Tejano and Cuban-American – so what is the point of another one? NBC Latino spoke with experts and educators to learn more about this sometimes misunderstood word.

Proponents of Latinx generally make two arguments about why the word is important. First, some people do not see themselves as either Latino or Latina, so using the term is a way to include them when referring to a group of people. Second, Latinx is a gender-neutral term that does not give preference to either the masculine or feminine form of an identifier.

This is just Newspeak; an attempt to remove gender from language
(so as to remove it as a concept from thought).

I put “human” as my race for the US Census. I also answer in a manner that is truthful but not helpful for all other intrusive or irrelevant questions they may ask. They are not entitled to know anything but the names and ages of the people in my family, nor are they entitled to know whether I have running water or how many toilets are in my home.

As for Latinx, it’s a stupid word for a concept that manages to be both stupid and trivial.

The French have become quite upset about the same tinkering being attempted with their language.
Trying to ‘fix’ what is not broken.

Isn’t it cultural imperialism to force Romance languages to have a Germanic neuter gender? Is it el latino, la latina and das latinx? Join me in a couple verses of Deutschland über alles. < /gander sauce>

I though if you pronounce Latinx with a Mexican accent, it’s “Latin-hee.”

Latinx

Sounds like a new stretchy durable material that would be useful for making comfortable men’s underwear.

Good grief! The ONE place where the word “gender” SHOULD be used is in language. In French, “chaussure” is feminine whether it is a man’s shoe or a woman’s shoe. The word “soulier” is masculine whether it is a man’s show or a woman’s shoe.

For efficiency’s sake, conventions have been developed, and they work. Only in the most extraordinary circumstances (old proper names) do we see syllables added with no explicit vowel in languages based on the Roman alphabet. Latinx would just add another new rule that doesn’t flow from actual use natural development, but from politics. Bad politics.

Latinx is a gender-neutral term for people of Latin American heritage.

No, its a way of denying and rejecting their Christian heritage.

Constitutionally the Census is entitled only to know the number of people residing at an address. It is purely supposed to be a count not a description.
