The myth of the "harmless wolf" resulted from intense hunting and trapping pressure.

Remove the hunting and trapping pressure, and wolves lose their fear of man as the top predator.

Same thing happened with Brown Bears on the Kenai Peninsula when I lived there. AK Dept of Fish and Game spread the myth that humans were intruding into the bear’s natural habitat and that is why there were so many “defense of life and property” shootings. Less than 1% of the land on the Kenai Peninsula is available for private ownership. The bears no longer feared humans - THAT is why there were more DLP encounters. Morons. I read recently that the policy has changed and now there is a regulated hunt for Brownies on the Kenai. The first two bears taken in 2016 each weighed over 1400 lbs. Kodiak Island bears have nothing on the Kenai bears.

A bear was coming up on my trash. I fired a round which hit about 15 feet behind him and he ran off. Actually, he went behind my garage and waited until I went back inside. He then came back and carried my garbage can back into the woods and ransacked it.

A warning shot is just a loud noise. It does not say, hey, I ought to leave this guy alone. If they are focused in on food it will not deter them for long and the next time, you might not notice them. The only safe wolf is a dead wolf. Sorry. There is no place where there are people that there should also be wolves.

A warning shot into an attacking predator is probably the best warning shot of all.

What a wimp...

Who can’t fight off a 83 lb wolf with their bare hands while his wolf buddies wait around for their turn...

I guess libtards think so...

Warning shots are of dubious value, whether the predator is an animal or (alleged) human. Make every shot count!

Not every hungry wolf will understand what a warning shot means.
The Department should not take advice from Joe Biden.

Release some wolves into ODFW offices. Let’s see how that goes.

The only good wolf is a dead one. We can hunt coyote year round here but not wolves yet.

SSS.

Shoot
Shovel
Shut up.

If the wolf has an electronic monitor, drop it on a truck heading out of state.

A warning shot is one less shot you’re going to get at an elusive target moving toward you. What if you have a bolt action rifle, or a scoped rifle? How fast can you chamber the next round, re-aquire the target, and send the next round, accurately? No. Put it down before you are in it’s kill zone.

Oh, and since wolves are cooperative, pack-hunters the hunter would have to assume that other wolves are working around your flanks unseen.

The hunter did give a warning ‘shout’ but the wolf refused to listen.

A warning shot? Anything is possible for he who has not to do it.

We have black bear just over 1000 yards from the highway beyond the back pasture. They are not cute, cuddly and friendly. They are hungry and looking for an opportunity at something to eat.

He should have shot it in the Paw like they always did on those old TV Westerns. Except for Lucas Mccain of course.

“Remove the hunting and trapping pressure, and wolves lose their fear of man as the top predator. “

It was the same thing with gators in Florida back in the early 70’s. I swam canals, lakes, rock pits, and tromped through swamp for years and had only one aggressive encounter with a gator.

Today they have lost fear of man and it’s not safe to stroll along the water’s edge in a lot of areas.

Aren’t warning shots illegal?
My understanding is that one should never admit to a warning shot, only shoot to kill when ‘in fear of your life’ otherwise end up in jail.

A lat of these this week.

Further investigation at the site of the shooting indicated the hunter was 27 yards from where he shot and where the wolf died. The wolf was seized and later released to ODFW for examination. The Union County District Attorney’s Office was consulted regarding the investigation, and based upon the available evidence, the case will not be prosecuted as this is believed to be an incidence of self-defense.

A wolf acting aggressively and failing to retreat at 27 yards (2-3 seconds) would seem to me to be a threat. In Oregon I'd take their word for it's being a wolf. In the upper midwest so many inbred with dogs and coyotes, a DNA test might be necessary if charges are brought.

A (Russian) shooting coach once commented on warning shots:

“Warning shot? Yes. Fire three warning shot. Two warning shot in chest, one warning shot in head.”

Funny guy - always had a good answer that made sense, and he always made his advice memorable. [Gunny was memorable too, but his explanations were more physical.]
