Remembering Thanksgiving in Hell(Barf alert)
Observer ^ | 24th November 2017 | John R Schindler

Providing the American military with a reasonable facsimile of the traditional Thanksgiving feast, wherever our forces are deployed around the globe, is a longstanding practice of our Defense Department. Yesterday, the Pentagon served up nearly 100,000 pounds of turkey, plus all the usual trimmings, to U.S. military personnel in countries around the globe, including war zones like Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some presidents have visited the troops serving in harm’s way—back in 2003, George W. Bush showed up in Baghdad by surprise to serve turkey to our troops—but Donald Trump, for his first presidential Thanksgiving, was content to address our military via video link from his Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida. It was the usual Trumpian reality TV boilerplate: “You’re very, very special people…We’re really winning. We know how to win…They [Presidents Bush and Obama] were letting you play even. We’re letting you win.”

As usual too, the veracity of the president’s statements seems debatable, at best, and not everybody was pleased with Trump’s Thanksgiving address to the troops. Mark Hertling, a retired U.S. Army three-star general, denounced Trump’s assessment as “somewhat insulting” to our forces, some of whom have been at war for 17 years and counting.

Serving the troops a traditional Thanksgiving meal, no matter where they are deployed, is a considerable logistical hassle for the Pentagon, while a presidential visit into a war zone—with its massive entourage and security on a gargantuan scale—is a much bigger one. It thus can be safely assumed that most of our military members were only too happy to hear President Trump pontificate via video rather than in-person.

In truth, Thanksgiving in the field constitutes a Pentagon fetish of sorts, and our military’s habit of bringing turkey with all the trimmings to combat zones hasn’t always been appreciated by troops who are trying to

What is the matter with these people? Trump tells the troops (but not what a retired perfumed Lt. Gen.) want to hear. Despite the carping of a media type he spends a part of Thanksgiving at a Coast Guard base, and then he goes back to work. The man is ten times more active (and more successful) than Obama ever was. It is like Limbaugh says, the Liberals have no sense of humor, are incapable of honest laughter, and have no desire to even co-exist with someone they consider their political enemy. Sad.

"German infantry weapons and tactics outpaced ours."

Tactics, possibly -- but weapons? The Garand alone gave US troops far greater capabilities than most German units.

Additionally, as terrible as out casualties were, the Germans suffered only a few thousand less, and were far less able to absorb them at that point.

As a Vietnam combat veteran with an Armored Cav unit, we were luck to get two hot meals a day - dehydrated eggs, hash browns, etc. for breakfast - and C-Rations when a hot meal was not available. Most of the time our “mess truck” was towed to wherever we RONd for the night. The mess staff worked their asses off to keep us fed and morale up. NOBODY expected a “spread” for Thanksgiving but we got it anyway. It was a Herculean effort by the support units, we all knew that, to coordinate and chopper in the hot Turkey and trimmings. Our own mess crews made fresh rolls and put everything together for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. What was MOST appreciated was not only the great meal we got but the super effort by those who supported us, those who went beyond their daily routines, to give us a great tasting HOT meal. The boost on morale was immeasurable!! No panty waisted “reporter” is going to tell me that the efforts by the military to treat our troops to a special Thanksgiving meal goes unappreciated.
