Sinking NFL Viewership Is Threatening To Crush Ad Sales
Business Insider ^ | 12-3-2017 | Joe Colli

When it comes to TV ratings, the National Football League needs a Hail Mary.

Average game viewership has fallen to 15 million this season, down from 16.5 million last year, and the lowest since 2008, according to data compiled by RBC Capital Markets.

The firm also finds that the league's audience is down on a year-over-year basis, and notes that it hasn't seen meaningful growth since 2013, when the measure climbed 5%. RBC says this has had an adverse effect on how advertisers view the prospect of buying time slots during NFL games.

"The sustained decline is what worries investors about media's willingness to offload the NFL's monetization risk," analyst Steven Cahall wrote in a client note.

Some would look only at the tail end of that indication line and conclude the popularity is actually on an uptick.
Yes, but sometimes the uptick is temporary, before the next plunge further down.

How about Christmas sales of jerseys, pajamas, and other NFL-related accessories? Think people are going to cough up $300 for an authentic jersey of a player giving America the middle finger?

Look at it like a stock market chart. The viewership is hitting lower lows and lower highs. Sign of great weakness. If it doesn’t break above -5% viewership loss, it will again turn down. As my broker used to say, it’s a dog.

I’ve been thinking al along that at some point the execs who run the NFL were going to realize “Hey, we’re losing money here!’’ and do something about this. Guess not. And do these idiots who are the players realize that if no one comes to see them chase a ball around their multi-million dollar paydays are over?

Aw, that's too bad. I feel partly responsible, as I have stopped watching NFL games. Has the NFL set up a GoFundMe page? I'd like to donate a billion dollars or so.

I don’t believe it. I’ll bet the truth is way worse and ratings are probably down 50% equal to the stadium attendance.

Few NFL Team T shirts seen in the malls this weekend. Many are being donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army. Many are tossed in the trash.

“Fantasy” Football is one reason some people still tune in.

Hopefully lots of fantasy leagues will make this their final year. Do the right thing and pull the plug on the NFL.

Same thing with season tickets. This year’s seats were all paid for in advance of the season’s start. No reason to renew them for next year and hopefully a huge number of people don’t.

The source of the NFL’s woes is really quite simple.

There is an unspoken agreement between the players and the fans that the game of football is an escape from worldly concerns like politics.

The players have reneged on that agreement, therefore the agreement no longer stands.

That's what a global warmist would do. Hockey Stick!

Do you really think the NFL will get the message?
Or will the NFL double down on virtue signaling and call the boycotters “racist”?
My money is on the latter.
Die, NFL, die! The marketplace will starve you to death!
