Its not much of an overstatement to say that the media are enjoying the Alabama upset.
It is, among other things, a great story, one that feels as much like a cultural moment, coming in the midst of a fierce national debate over sexual harassment, as a political verdict. And there was the late-night drama of Doug Jones surging past Roy Moore in the final hour of vote-counting, producing a Democratic victory that once might have been hard to imagine.
And before we get into the finger-pointing, these elements were overshadowed during the raucous campaign: Jones outspent Moore 10 to 1, which translates into a flood of TV ads and a superior ground game. And that, in turn, helped produce black turnout on the same level as when Barack Obama was on the ballot, which no one expected.
But there's no getting around the fact that President Trump, despite his initial reluctance, endorsed Moore, touted him at a rally in nearby Pensacola and recorded a robo-call for him. That makes Trump 0 for 2 in Alabama, since he had backed appointed senator Luther Strange in the primary.
Of course, its entirely possible that Moore, without Trump, would have lost by well over 20,000 votes.

Republicans refused to provide any funds when accusations came out.
Who GAS about the party? The pubbie party needs to die so that it can be reborn into something useful.
Like clintons never let a crisis go to waste, Trump will win this battle, too. Its for balance in the senate In a couple of years theyll send someone in to beat the dem. Hell have learned a lot about how his enemies operate. And who they are
If even i know, he knows the gop wants no part of being in any majority, including the Supreme Court
If they think theyre winning, theyre stupid as Megan Kelly trying to fix her faking popularity by piling on with the Trump attacks which sunk her this low
Had Moore won Tuesday night, the screams of racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, etc would be even more louder now. I also recall reading reports about how the Senate would likely have done an investigation of Moore (regardless if the reasons were fair or unfair) before he would have been allowed to even be sworn in. I wonder if all of that would have been that major unneeded distraction. Al Franken now looks that bit more pathetic by staying on (still as of now).
I also wonder if the Soros/Dem/RINO machine paid that great deal for that seat that if Jones wants to keep it for more than just that remainder of that term, he’s likely going to have to be that kind of a Zell Miller conservative Southern Dem.
And Al Franken would have stayed in the Senate. The Minnesota Gov has now appointed the Lt Gov to the seat and Al will be gone. Yes, I know she is a hard core Lefty, but Franken has always been a pig who gained his seat by cheating. Glad to see him gone.
I couldn’t care less if Al stays or goes, as if he’s the only one like that in the Senate. Doesn’t make a difference in the big scheme of things.
“The pubbie party needs to die so that it can be reborn into something useful.”
There would be too many years of Speaker Pelosi and majority leader Schumer in between. No, the party needs to be systematically taken over from within. IOW, keep draining the swamp. Moore was a bad candidate, and would have likely been an albatros. There was anti-establishment fever going on, so Strange was out. Should have listened to Trump.
And once the Rats get that power, there’s no giving it up. They want a One-Party dictatorship.
“Had Moore won Tuesday night, the screams of racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, etc would be even more louder now. ... I wonder if all of that would have been that major unneeded distraction.”
This.
All else aside, we’d hear a solid year of endless baseless accusations, making progress difficult. Losing outright is certainly bad, but winning with a baggage-laden Republican isn’t much better.
That the D won by a ridiculously small margin against a seriously damaged-goods candidate should encourage the Rs to properly vet their next candidate and take back Alabama.
I think that if Moore had won, it would have helped the party. It would have strengthened the President and it would have helped Make America Great Again. The bogus allegations would have gone away, and the GOP would be better off.
But with Moore’s loss I think the Republican Party is dead. It is to me. They did not support. They did not provide money. They did not defend. The GOP wanted the Democrat to win. Fine. You no longer have my vote. Let all the Democrats win. Let it all burn until we get an actual party that is willing to oppose the Democrats. It sure as hell isn’t the GOP.
No. Next question.
The writer is a wuss. Of course maybe you would have heard that, but it would have died down very quickly as Moore would have been shoved into the background. All he had to do was to vote on Trump’s SCOTUS picks, and it would have been worth whatever “trouble” he might have brought.
I don’t think the Rats will keep Alabama. This was a off-year special election for a single seat contested by a baggage-laden* “good ol’ boy” that few were enthusiastic for, vs a Leftist who had to outspend by 10x and rally a special-interest group that now wants their payoff ... and the Rat won by a minuscule margin.
* - the unproven-but-stuck “pedophilia” label was just one repulsive point, veiling a bunch of other stances that frankly are distasteful to a great many conservatives - things which might be overlooked in an otherwise good candidate but just deflated what was left after the flurry of accusations made him hard to approach.
Where are the accusers now? Oh wait, cashing in their checks. Never to be heard from again.
It was a farce
I am sure with a measly 200K we could have “found” some men that Jones has touched when they were boys. The lesson here is that we have to play dirty, when they play dirty.
Faux thought that throwing BOR under the bus would solve the attacks on them.
It didn’t work.
We can take away a couple of things from this election:
1.) Smear campaigns work. If it hadn’t been for the smears, it’s highly likely Moore would have won.
2.) The GOP has once again proved that it is indeed “The Stupid Party”. With unified GOP support, it is highly likely Moore would have won.
the screams of racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, etc would be even more louder now.
You’re exactly right. As republicans, we need to make damn sure our candidates are strictly non-controversial and conform to the main stream media talking points. If we do that maybe the press won’t fabricate negative stories about them and they’ll get elected. The last thing we need to do is nominate christian, constitutional conservatives. They are way too controversial.
You know what happens when you assume?
Unfortunately you are correct on both counts.
The good guys need to find a credible candidate for 2020 and win the seat back, and find a way to get Shelby out of there as well.
Can’t drain the swamp until we elect some committed swamp drainers.
This is going to be a long process and we need to learn from our mistakes.
