Concerns Over Fake Comments on FCC Net Neutrality
WNEP-16 ^ | 14 December 2017 | Dave Bohman

WILKES-BARRE -- For the past few months, the Federal Communications Commission asked for comments from the public on whether it should end net neutrality. Thousands of comments came from people in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. But it appears many, if not most of these comments, are fake.

We called 12 people whose names were listed as making comments with the FCC and none of them said they even contacted the agency. That includes a woman from Wilkes-Barre who admits she doesn't even know what the FCC does. The Christmas spirit runs through the home of Darlene Mapes in Wilkes-Barre, but her smile goes away when she learns her name is on a government document to the federal communications commission.

"I never did that," Mapes said.

But FCC files show that in August, Mapes wrote, "the Obama-era FCC regulations (known as net neutrality) enable the federal government to exert an unnecessary amount of regulatory control of the internet."

The FCC file shows Mapes writing, "I support Chairman Pai's proposal."

"I don't know a Chairman Pai," she said.

The FCC lists more than 500 people from Dunmore as commenting on net neutrality, including former borough council member Paul Nardozzi. He believes most of his neighbors on the list did not contact the agency.

"If they can use my name and have my address idiotic as that, God only knows what someone else could use your name for," Nardozzi said.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro believes so many fake comments hurt people who opposed the FCC. He wants to see a federal investigation into how the names of so many people were used without their knowledge.

"Approximately one million fake accounts were created, and really it influenced their decision to gut net neutrality," Shapiro said.

Darlene Mapes hopes the new rules don't slow down her internet which she only uses to play games. And she's still concerned about her name being listed on a government document taking a stand on an issue she knows nothing about.

"They don't have a right to use my name." You may be concerned that your name is connected to a comment with the FCC and there's an easy way to find out. The attorney general's office has set up a web page where you can check to see if a fake comment has been made in your name.

It’s coming - right around the corner.

Sure. My Netgear router supports using a VPN. I'm sure DD-WRT does as well. I don't have the router it set up to use it. I use it on my web surfing devices and my android TV box. But if I thought they were messing with Netflix, I would set it up on the router. If they can't see the protocols, they can't mess with them. I think in this day and age, it is prudent to surf with a vpn and always use private browsing.

The Obama NN rules were enacted in 2015. Was there some big problem with the internet in 2014 that I never heard about? Why are we trying to fix a problem that does not exist? If in the future they intentionally break Netflix, we can deal it then and tailor the rules to fix the problem that actually occurs.

The real problem is the content providers, especially Facebook. Facebook is now the beginning and end of the internet for millions of people. Facebook gets to decide what they see and hear. That kind of concentration is a fundamental threat to our freedom. NN does nothing about it.

Oh, I meant the service providers, not the government. Lord knows, look what they did to public school and the post office, that’s argument alone enough against NN.

"My point: Comcast had the upper hand of CONTROL because Vonage needed an Internet connection to pass through in order to work."

And you had the option to change providers because of the way Comcast handled that. You were using Comcast's wires. They had the choice of how to manage their offering. You had the choice of being their customer. This is no different than any other business.

I was positively shocked at my Fakebook feed after the FCC vote. So many people I know have bought into the Net Neutrality schtick. It was depressing. It’s not just that they (and the folks commenting on the posts) were opposed—they were talking in apocalyptic language. You would think that someone was boiling live puppies.

And REMOVING net neutrality means the Comcast type companies can now control the routes and costs that those packets travel.

What you FAIL to comprehend is that if Comcast does that, someone will build an alternative road.

Removing Net Neutrality will break the hold that ISPs have over the internet.

I agree, in theory, as I said above. The problem is that there’s an enormous barrier to entry in the form of last-mile cabling.

Wires are so 20th Century.

Oh dear! You mean, we’re returning to the status quo ante - way, way back in, um, gee, when did NN get enacted? Oh yeah - 2015. How did we survive without the government’s heavy hand during the interweb’s first twenty years?

Facebook gets to decide what they see and hear. That kind of concentration is a fundamental threat to our freedom. NN does nothing about it.

This whole thing started because I posted the POV on NN sent to me by my long time friend, a top level Internet security person for the SEC ( Securities & Exchange Comm in Wash DC )

After that I was and have been under attack as if I were LENIN or Stalin attempting to bring back hard core SOCIALISM. Your response, I'm hasppy to say, is NOT in the same category of many of the others who were outright ANGRY. I thought for a minute I was at Berkley.

I even received a DIRECT response from Jim Robinson, the owner of FR chastising by a$$.

This is Free Republic. We defend the constitution, freedom and free-markets here—not big government and socialism. This is a freedom site. We talk freedom here. If you want to talk socialism, go join a socialist site.

Opened my eyes. Disagreement is one thing, but anger and animosity directed at me as a "Socialist" by quite a few, all because I attempted to defend, NOT mine, but my long time friend's POV, was surprising, because I am a hard core CONSERVATIVE ( check any of my past posts over the years ) who was exercising the FIRST amendment defending a knowledgeable friend and trying to have a little fun doing it. Bad idea on my part!

For awhile I felt like a "Black" in the old South. The experience surprised me.. and I'm fearless!

Remember, the Net Neutrality concept was developed by an avowed Marxist professor of journalism. believe his name was McDougal or McDouglas, possibly from NW University (a leftist shithole if there ever was one).

There was also a couple other Marxists who helped develop this concept, possibly at the Un. of Wisconsin (the name Rogers pops up in my mind).

Their ideas were published in at least one book and several articles, probably at the Marxist “The Nation” or the old “Monthly Review”.

I know that a lot of this can be found documented at www.keywiki.org and www.DiscoverTheNetwork.org and by a couple of media/communications watching organizations too.

It was a powergrab concept and effort by the Marxist Left o silence or at least reduce the public’s access to conservative websites, band-space, etc.

Someone here at FR who knows the issue better than I should hope on in an fill in the blanks in my immediate information.

Replying to myself re additional information on “net neutrality”.

The site www.keywiki.org has vital information on some of the originators and promoters of “net neutrality”, Professors Robert W. Mc Chesney (Un. of Ill, Urbana-Champaign, Prof. Joel Rogers - Un. of Wisconsin - Madision, and John Nichols of the Marxist “The Nation” magazine.

Rogers record includes writing for The Nation, cofounder of the Marxist “New Party” which was key to Obama’s political career in Illinois, then the US Senate race, and the Marxist Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

In fact all three of them have ties, often by participation in DSA conferences, events, etc.

McChesney, Nichols and Josh Silver (another leftist), were cofounders of “Free Press” in 2002, which was behind a lot of activities in support of net neutrality and keeping conservatives from gaining a strong foothold in the mass media structures (re ownership, licenses, etc).

Net Neutrality, reduced to its’ common denominator, is summed up by one word, “Marxist”.

Check out www.keywiki.org for yourself. Look under McChesney, Nichols and Rogers for their page sites (use their full names. There is another “The Free Press” which is not the same as the one mentioned above.
