PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Many students are heading home for the holiday, and they were concerned given Monday's Amtrak derailment south of Seattle.
"It's actually a little scary because my mom sent it to me and I am getting ready to go on the train," said Temple student Brandon Odems. "I think it's crazy and I really feel for those people and their families."
Many couldn't help but think of the derailment of Amtrak train 188 here in Philadelphia just two and a half years ago. An attorney, who represented many of those victims, says he has a good guess as to what caused today's derailment out west.
Robert Mongeluzzi is a personal injury attorney who represented 34 passengers onboard Amtrak train 188.

The NTSB found that the Philadelphia derailment could have been prevented by positive train control, a computerized speed-limiting system. The safety measure is not in place nationwide. Amtrak's CEO confirms the safety system was not activated on the stretch the Washington train was traveling today.
"Well, they clearly haven't learned," said Mongeluzzi. "How many more people are you going to kill before this company makes safety first and they obviously haven't done it."

Maybe Obama and crew decided just because one was a meth head and had other mental problems, they shouldn't be excluded from the hiring pool - that's racist and bigoted....and just not fair --- after all, we had a coke-head for president....
The Ann Coulter rule for naming the engineer of this ill fated train is in effect.
The rule states that the longer it takes until we find out the name and details of the engineer who is responsible for this deadly deed the less likely it will be found to be a white male.
It’s been so long now since the accident that the odds are almost zero that it will be a white male.
In 1980, I took a round trip on Amtrak from Los Angeles to Ann Arbor, Mich. The train arrived at Ann Arbor 14 hours late and returned 12 hours late. After that experience, I swore that I would never again ride Amtrak, and I never have.
Was the DRIVER CONDUCTOR(?) KILLED?? WHAT’s HIS NAME?? Not a dickey bird word about him.
Unions.
The last few Amtrak accidents have all been drug related.
...or a straight guy.
Another possible parallel with the 2015 crash.
“Ride with pride.”
and how would the race/ethnicity of the engine driver matter, exactly?
“derailment could have been prevented by positive train control, a computerized speed-limiting system.”
You could say this about any vehicle accident. In reality the derailment could have been prevented by a competent engineer.
A quick Google yielded dozens of articles showing how grossly mismanaged this company is...and as an added bonus We The People subsidize it to the tune of BILLIONS each year!
Can’t wait for the President’s tweet on this fiasco!
It should’ve been privatized or disbanded decades ago.
This article is from 2015 (Philly accident, I think?) but you could change the date and location and write the same piece:

and how would the race/ethnicity of the engine driver matter, exactly?
For one the length of time his/her name is reported in the news.
Of course not. Amtrak needs time for its lawyers to isolate Amtrak and to document the blame exclusively on that person.
Also, shredding records can't be done instantly.
That’s funny, my last trip on Amtrak was in 1980 as well. I rode from Milwaukee to Whitefish, MT where I got off, unpacked and assembled a touring bike (bicycle) and rode off on a great adventure. The train trip was on what was a new train set that year, and I was fairly impressed by the experience. Later I learned that the fares on a trip like that (The Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle) covered approximately 50% of the operating costs of the trip. The rest was picked up by poor schmuck general revenue taxpayers across the country. To say nothing of the capital costs.
Yeah, have we heard the name anywhere?
Him? Her? ROP? Inquiring minds want to know.
The conductor and engineer both survived.
Could be the longer they withhold the names could be related to chain immigration.
Don’t forget the tie-in with Sound Transit, which is an incredible Washington State boondoggle.
Amtrak+Sound Transit=formula for disaster.
Wisconsin BARELY escaped that same madness when ‘Diamond’ Jim Doyle (D, WI) was Governor.
Those costs include the salaries of the bloated staff. I had taken trains all over Europe, and each train had only one conductor, but those Amtrak trains had several.
We can thank that paragon of Republican conservatism, Richard Nixon, for creating Amtrak.
