In a rapid-fire drama Davy Crockett would be proud to regale, a 68-year-old man living deep in Minnesota's northwoods wrestled an angry bear off his little dog.
Bill Vagts and Darla, his 30-pound Corgi, survived their bite wounds from the bear, which then lumbered down the road near McDougal Lake and attacked two other men Tuesday morning

The dreaded Man-Bear-Pig.
Darla bearly made it out alive.
Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) would’ve said...”I wrestled a bahr...”

Should have pulled out his KABAR (name came from old trapper
who wrote company saying had used it to “Kill a Bar” )
and engaged in hand to hand combat
Amazing guy and family. A Last Alaskan. Watched that show religiously.

“They have an innate fear [of humans],” Provost said. “We are considered some type of a predator. It’s in their best interest to not be around humans.”
Yeah? Bears are sentient animals. They THINK. That means that have INDIVIUDALITY.
Some bears feel that way. Others, generally large males, view us as a mountain of fat and protein to fatten up on.
At age 84, my husbands maternal grandmother shot a bear she saw through the kitchen window. She put down the dish cloth and picked up her gun. Those northern Minnesotans are a hale and hearty bunch.
I can see why. At 68 and wrestling bears, this guy's a bad ass.
I have had black bear encounters — by which I mean confrontations in which they had to be faced down and run off. It’s very rare for a black bear to attack humans. I wouldn’t be afraid either. It’s a mystery why this one was so aggressive.
I am not particularly bad ass, but I love my dogs too.
concur...... my experience is that if you yell and beat on something the black bear will wander off.
they are however persistent. They know the pack is hanging in the tree and after you go back to sleep, the bear will have another crack at it
Shades of freeper Kanawa.
Thanks for the reply. I know about Kabar but didn’t know how it got its name.
I’ve been near bears but never had to face one down, thank God. Hats off!
Thanks, Friend

If I had thought about it for 2-3 seconds, I would have watched that bear tear my dog apart.”
I love that dog.”

I sent a email to one of the reporters hoping that he can forward it on to Bill.
