I was GM of a fueling business on the Great lakes for 16 years.
We operated an 8,000 bbl fueling tanker that did 99 percent of our transfers inside the Duluth-Superior harbor.
One in a very great while, we went outside to put fuel on a ‘saltie” waiting at anchor for a spot at a grain terminal.
On one occasion, we trucked 10 loads of hot N6 from Superior, WI to Thunder Bay for a Canada Steamship freighter that was facing the prospect of being frozen in over winter. The chief had misjudged his bunker filling and we were able to bail him out.
The ten loads got him down from Lake Superior and over to Sarnia for a fill up.
The next spring, a CSL captain in uniform stopped by my St. Paul office and gave me a gift of Canadian whiskey. The guys in the office kidded me on end about “joining the Canadian Navy.”

The marine fuels job was the most fun and most challenging I ever had.

I wonder. It aint that easy, you know.I was on a replenishment oiler in the Navy. We transferred fuel and supplies all the time at sea.

I wonder. It aint that easy, you know. I served on a tanker back in the day it actually is that easy.

To do it the way the Navy does it requires real seamanship.

True, but such transfers could never supply even a tiny percentage of the oil DPRK needs to function.

Do you really think Rocket Man cares about anyone else in his little prison state than himself?
The defector with all of the worms was barely able to get 10 miles on that ‘jeep’ he drove to the border before it fell apart the first time it got off the pavement.

Sure. I served in two AEs (and a CG, an ARS, a DDG, and a DD). But think about everything that went into an UNREP, all the training, expertise, and competence. That’s a huge amount of institutional knowledge.
We made it look easy, but that doesn’t mean that just anybody can do it.

We fueled carrier fleets while they launched attacks all the time.

I remember the Taluga.
Do you really regard all you did out there as “easy?”

Do you really regard all you did out there as easy? Hard work but if a bunch of drunks could do it how hard could it be?

Give us some hard numbers. The S. Koreans are saying there may have been 30 such transfers in the last 2 months.
I’d also be curious as to whether the Iranians actually abide by the sanctions.
