Iranian cities hit by anti-government protests (more cities now)
BBC ^ | Dec. 29, 2017

Anti-government demonstrations that began in Iran on Thursday have now spread to several major cities.

Large numbers reportedly turned out in Rasht, in the north, and Kermanshah, in the west, with smaller protests in Isfahan, Hamadan and elsewhere.

The protests began against rising prices but have spiralled into a general outcry against clerical rule and government policies.

A small number of people have been arrested in Tehran, the capital.

They were among a group of 50 people who gathered in a city square, Tehran's deputy governor-general for security affairs told the Iranian Labour News Agency.

The US State Department condemned the arrests and urged "all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption".

How did the protests start?

The demonstrations began in the north-eastern city of Mashhad - the country's second most-populous - on Thursday.

People there took to the streets to express anger at the government over high prices, and vented their fury against President Hassan Rouhani. Fifty-two people were arrested for chanting "harsh slogans".

The protests spread to other cities in the north-east, and and some developed into broader anti-government demonstrations, calling for the release of political prisoners and an end to police beatings. ◾Hassan Rouhani, the president who moved left ◾Iranians urge Rouhani not to disappoint

On Friday, despite warnings from authorities, the demonstrations spread further to some of the biggest cities in the country.

They represent the most serious and widespread expression of public discontent in Iran since mass protests in 2009 that followed a disputed election, correspondents say.

This happens ever decade, and I know how it ends: hundreds, if not thousands killed and "disappeared", and tens of thousands imprisoned, usually between age 16 and 36.

.......because they don't have a 2nd Amendment.

I suspect Trump won’t betray the protesters like obastard betrayed the Egyptian ones. And I think the protesters know that.

Trump has an awful lot on his hands right now, but, hopefully some have seen this coming, and there are plans to take advantage of it.

We should mind our own business. Arrogant meddling in Iranian affairs helped get us where we are today and meddling is the surest way to destroy any chances for change. The question of the Iranian regime is a matter for the Iranians to solve on their own.

In general I agree with nonintervention. However, Iran is already threatening to attack Israel and the USA, the little and great satans. If they get nukes, possibly from N Korea if not of their own making, it would just be a matter of time before something like a Liberian registered ship entered the Port of New York and detonated a nuke. And then they would deny it was them. It could have been the N Koreans.

You can blame Jimmy Carter for abandoning the last Shah of Iran (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi)

Iran was becoming a modern country back in the 1970s. Look up pictures. Western dress, modern education system, women suffrage, women could drive, vote, wear dresses or pants in public.

A large part of the population of Iran is under 35 and the average age is 27. They are not into this religious rule.

“Trump has an awful lot on his hands right now, but, hopefully some have seen this coming, and there are plans to take advantage of it.”

Funny how the American’s and Israeli’s got together to discuss a strategy on Iran and a day later this happens.

Coincidence? I think not.

Too bad Trump wasn’t in office when the Green Movement was rising back in 2009. Obama wouldn’t even acknowledge there was a challenge to his beloved mullahs.

We should mind our own business.

It is our business. They are developing rockets and nukes.. They don't organize mob's screaming "Death to America" for nothing. We've got a second bite at the apple here, this time organize and train armed resistance .
