How the Russia Inquiry Began: A Campaign Aide, Drinks and Talk of Political Dirt

During a night of heavy drinking at an upscale London bar in May 2016, George Papadopoulos, a young foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, made a startling revelation to Australia’s top diplomat in Britain: Russia had political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

About three weeks earlier, Mr. Papadopoulos had been told that Moscow had thousands of emails that would embarrass Mrs. Clinton, apparently stolen in an effort to try to damage her campaign.

Exactly how much Mr. Papadopoulos said that night at the Kensington Wine Rooms with the Australian, Alexander Downer, is unclear. But two months later, when leaked Democratic emails began appearing online, Australian officials passed the information about Mr. Papadopoulos to their American counterparts, according to four current and former American and foreign officials with direct knowledge of the Australians’ role.

The hacking and the revelation that a member of the Trump campaign may have had inside information about it were driving factors that led the F.B.I. to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russia’s attempts to disrupt the election and whether any of President Trump’s associates conspired.

Just trying to protect our nice little forum of sanity from turning into a trash heap like Twitter or Reddit etc.

We have historically been professionals, who don’t put up with BS, in fact we shoot it down with our knowledge and experience.

Anyone who just posts link after link to those shit holes would be better off over there, full time. Bring facts, for debate, not spewing trash everywhere that others have to clean up.

Good night!

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

And stop crapping on me and the other FReepers who enjoy info from other sources and bring it onto the forum for discussion; we’re intelligent enough to pull it apart.

Your grandiose opinion of yourself is becoming tedious.

I guess we’ll see in 2 weeks (when the IG report is due) whether Horowitz is a black or white hat. I’m betting white. Why? Because Trump is so informed in advance, some people think he has a time machine. Everything Trump exudes is that the IGs are his ace in the hole.

lol... USA news media would not report it at the time, there was short blip on Reuters, I think. I read about it at Canada Free Press, once it had sold, and been removed from Iraq.

Who the freaking heck are you to order people on FR to not post from wherever they want if it is not against FR rules?

Who died and made you the God King? Are you the freaking Hall Monitor, Kapo or head Matron or something?

How bout this - you post whatever drivel or droppings you like, and “allow” other people to post what THEY like?

If you keep harassing freepers you deserve the exact same treatment.

If you find something from Twitter that appears useful, and do your own verification using a reliable source from outside Twitter, then post your corroborating evidence from outside Twitter.

Apparently you know nothing whatsoever about twitter. Apparently you have no clue that many twitter writers have EXTENSIVE (hint - that means LOTS AND LOTS) of links to "actual" news articles supporting their positions or statements.

Or maybe you mean you want freepers to only post stuff from "real" news sites like Slate, WaPo, CNN, Huffpo and the NYT?And again, who died and made you the hall monitor of FR to order people around?

Exactly. The beauty of FR from its earliest days was the swift analysis by Freepers of everything posted with punches, counterpunches and frequent derailments into hilarity!

I'm finding it a little fascinating that this article doesn't mention more about who Alexander Downer is. Because while he is Australia's highest official in Britain (our High Commissioner - basically an Ambassador but Commonwealth Realms don't send Ambassadors to other Commonwealth Realms) that's kind of an emeritus position for him.

Alexander Downer was Australia's Foreign Minister from 1996 until 2007 in the conservative Howard government - our longest serving Foreign Minister. He was the Leader of the (conservative) Liberal Party, and as such, Leader of the Opposition in Australia for a period in 1994/1995.

He is a lot more senior - and a lot more experienced - than this article mentions.

Apparently, Downer, the Australian diplomat who allegedly alerted American officials to Papadopolous’ “Russians have dirt on Hillary” claim, has documented ties to the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation, some of which can be seen at the link below:

He was Australia’s Foreign Minister for four years when Bill Clinton was US President and most specifically Australian was courting US support for its foreign policy and defence policy particularly in areas like East Timor.

It’s not that surprising he wound up forming some sort of relationship with the Clinton Administration.

Successive Australian governments have provided some funding to foreign aid initiatives being undertaken by the Clinton Foundation - as it provides such money to all sorts of different bodies on occasion. At the time Downer had any involvement in such decisions on behalf of the Australian government, the Bush administration in the US was also making use of the Clinton Foundation.

There might be some sort of skeleton in Downer’s closet (which is why I mentioned his background - people should know who the man is and the NY Times did a very poor job in telling anybody) - but none of this seems that suspicious to me.

Despite the hysteria this article created today, it’s important to note that the events in question STILL did not precede the existence of the dossier, or more importantly, even the delivery of the dossier to the FBI, if you believe they didn’t know about it since it’s original conception. Therefore, the NYT attempt to claim that this new info somehow predates the dossier, is actually a failure.

Per the NYT article today:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/30/us/politics/how-fbi-russia-investigation-began-george-papadopoulos.html?_r=0

“The hacking and the revelation that a member of the Trump campaign may have had inside information about it were driving factors that led the F.B.I. to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russia’s attempts to disrupt the election and whether any of President Trump’s associates conspired.”

Now, compare that to Byron York’s article from last month, which has been considered the most complete piece regarding the dossier timeline:

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/byron-york-did-dossier-trigger-the-trump-russia-probe/article/2640470

“Steele told the left-leaning publication Mother Jones that he took the first part of his dossier to the FBI “near the start of July.”

James Comey, when he was FBI director, told members of the House Intelligence Committee the Trump-Russia investigation began “in late July.”

So the timeline is: The first dossier report was June 20, Steele approached the FBI near the start of July, and the FBI began its investigation in late July.”

I’m speaking of the Joe Wilson who was Valerie Plame’s husband. AFTER he was a Diplomat, do you know what line of work he had ?

Online info: Plame is married to Joe Wilson, a diplomat who became a prominent Iraq War critic. Dispatched to Africa in 2002 on a mission to trace nuclear material that the Bush administration was trying to link to Saddam Hussein’s “weapons of mass destruction,” Wilson found nothing. In a devastating essay in the New York Times, he debunked the run up to the war and infuriated Vice President Dick Cheney, among others.

So basically Joe Wilson either lied, or did not know about the ‘yellowcake’ buried near Iran, in Iraq, found by soldiers during Bush War. Cheney & Bush had a right to be upset!

No, I do not. Do you work for Robert Mueller? There's much more evidence of that.
